By far the majority of the population of the province of Roman Britain lived in the countryside - in smallholdings, small villages and villas ranging from small houses to extravagantly appointed rural seats. This book looks at the evidence for life in the countryside in Roman Britain - through buildings, objects and the undeniable impact of the Roman army - and examines how it changed through the 400 years of Roman rule.

I first encountered the author in Time Team and his knowledge knocked me over, this book is not big but the contents are. Guy knows every detail of Roman building, the materials and the Engineer ( Roman name for Architect ) ideology that the building must be place with exact requirements on all sides. Read the book and you will wish a few Romans were around to build the house of your dreams. This history seems closer to the future than the position we are in today in regard to our housing needs... or our first buy....Great stuff.
