Section 2 goes over the following themes: Teamwork and Collaboration • Creativity and Ideation • Risk, Failure, and Resilience • Empathy and Customer-Centric or User-Centric Design • Design Representation
Each of these high level categories drills down into specific areas of focus (e.g. T&C has a section for “Asking better questions to others”), briefly mentions why this skill or technique is relevant to the design process, and when necessary explains how to perform the skill (e.g. in how to run a proper group brainstorming). I would not recommend trying to read this cover-to-cover, but better to skim section 2, start with the engineering-related area or skill you want to focus on, and then look over some of the improv games. (Or if you are familiar with some games, but never thought to apply them to your professional life, look up the game and see how they relate back.)
I had the pleasure of attending a live workshop with Pius and his colleague Rachel, where I also learned about this book. They led us through a number of these improv games and related them back to situations typically encountered in a designer or engineer’s workflows. I look forward to trying some of these games out with teammates in the future!
