I'm blown away by with this four gang extension lead "Multiplug".
Initially I thought I had bought the wrong version, as the packaging and instructions made absolutely no mention of SMART control of any kind other than the little plastic "remote control handset" with buttons that comes with it. I had bought this Multiplug in the hope that it could be integrated into my Amazon Alexa Smart Home System and had already bought the little MiHome Hub to go with it. I'm pleased to report that it works beautifully !!!

In order to get it to speak to Alexa, there are a number of simple steps that need to be completed...
    1. Set up and register a MiHome HUB (doesn't do anything SMART without it)
    2. Open the MiHome app and ADD A DEVICE ( I was completely "thrown" at this stage because I couldn't see a Multiplug option, but it is hidden under the ADAPTER heading) Once you see and select it, you just follow the setup instructions.
    3. This is the important stage - Each SOCKET within the Multiplug needs to be NAMED individually e.g. Jack's Bedside light, Gill's Bedside Light, Jack's Electric Blanket, Gill's Electric Blanket - Or whatever meets your particular needs
    4. Once the Multiplug is working correctly with the hand control AND it is working from the MiHome app ( pushing virtual buttons for each named socket you are then ready to link it to ALEXA
5.Open your Alexa APP, go to SKILLS and find the MiHome SKILL which you need to ENABLE
    6. Once enabled, all that is left is to say to Alexa " FInd my devices"
    7. Hey.presto, Each named socket will appear as a SMART HOME DEVICE and it can then be treated as any other device, It can be activated by speech, it can be GROUPED, put into ROUTINES etc etc

Finally, the blurb says that many MiHome devices do not report their status i.e. you don't know if they are ON or OFF at any given time, but Alexa seems to know and correctly reports Status, as it does with most other devices.

    In a word MAGIC !!!

First rate item, has good range, tested and works through 2 walls without control issues. Product datecode is 5213.

The only gripe would be that the mains present indicator is too bright and will illuminate a room if
left in the open, i.e. not under a bed. [The indicator is a green LED].

The unit also has a Red LED [again very bright], which illuminates if any of the four sockets are on, this is further
supplemented by another LED adjacent to the actual socket that has been selected, these are not so bright and
much kinder on the eye, these are used to visually confirm correct control functionality.

Any 13A outlet may be turned on by pressing the appropriate socket control number 1 through to 4,
All sockets may be operated or turned off by the 5th set of on / off buttons on the remote.

The remote comes with a plastic tab to isolate the battery which needs to be removed by pulling out, control transmission is confirmed by a red flashing LED on the remote. Any function button pressed on the remote will cause this LED to flash

These are good but the only issue I’ve had was when I charged a laptop in plug number one it resulted in the power being stuck on. I initially thought this was a fault with the one I received but it happened again with a replacement. I managed to get it to switch off eventually and fed this back to the manufacturer so may not be an issue anymore but if you have a laptop or anything with an AC charger, make sure you put this in plug 2 or 3. Not had cause to use plug 4 yet so can’t comment on that one.

Much energy is, I'm sure, wasted by many people who can't be bothered to turn off wall sockets and leave chargers and other low-voltage devices plugged in though inactive - wall sockets that are often in the least convenient place to be turned on and off with ease. The excuse to leave them on is increased with extension leads that have multiple devices attached. When one of those devices is, say, charging one's phone and there's only one switch for the whole lot, unplugging just the devices one isn't using is the only option and is a real pain. But spare the pain, now there are extension leads like this that let you turn each of four sockets on or off individually without even bending down. Of course there's still annoyance if you can't find the remote, but I stuck the remote to the wall using double-sided sticky pads next to the usual light switch. Do I really need a portable switch for a non-portable plug?

How well does this thing work? It works, is the main thing. My dreams of convenience were met, and all for only a few quid more than an boring old extension lead without remote control. I paid about £20.

And downsides? Not really. The remote evidently wasn't designed to be stuck to the wall; it's back isn't flat, but double-sided sticky pads are really quite sticky, and mine hasn't fallen off the wall yet after about three weeks of use. What I have found is that if I stand between the remote and the plug when I activate the controls, it doesn't always work. I think I am so dense perhaps that I block the radio waves. So I've learned to stand aside and it works reliably. Visitors, however, might not realise this, so I have produced a sign, based on one I saw in the Science Museum in London. It says: "This room is equipped with Edison Electric Light. Do not attempt to light with match. Simply turn key on wall by the door." I realise it's a bit out of date - harking back to the days when most lighting was accomplished with gas mantles. When people comment on it that reminds me to tell them not to stand in front of the buttons if they want to control the room lights that I use this device to control.
