I always thought the Absence showed a lot of potential on their first few albums, esp Riders of the Plague, but always had this nagging feeling that they could do a lot better. Well, I'm really happy to report that on Enemy Unbound, their thrid, they've finally lived up to such expectations and deliver a whalloping riff fest of American-meets-Swedish steel.

For those who don't know them, The Absence are one of the better bands coming out of the states playing that common yet undeniably interesting blend of American thrash/death/groove with the more melodic style of Swedish melodeth that reared its ugly head in Gothenburg all those years ago. What really makes Enemy Unbound superior to the Absence's peers (and earlier material) is two fold. For one, the band have significantly widened the pale of their influnces, incoprorating huge chunks of NWOBHM, classic heavy metal and even cuts of classic rock that harken back to the golry days of Rainbow, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. This not only adds that much needed variety to the proceddings, but also makes this much more memorable then Riders on the Plague by giving the songs a greater musical texture and color. Secondly, Enemy Unbound sees the band cut back slightly in speed and velocity the make room for some truly spectacular guitar histrionics. At times almost channeling the otherworldy powers of Steve Vai and Joe Satriani, axe masters Peter Joseph and Patrick Pintavalle bomard the listener with riff after riff after glorious riff, with complex and intricate leads to burn holes in the o-zone layer while the punishing combination of groove/thrash/melodeth churns underneath with enough ferocity to cause a small earthquake.
