Product Description

All 13 episodes from series one of the TV drama portraying the daily life of Channel islanders under German occupation during WWII. As the only British territory to be occupied by the Nazi regime during WWII, the Channel Islands represented a glimpse of what life in Britain could have been like if Germany had won the war. Blending archive footage with contemporary film techniques, the series achieved a gritty realism that went a long way to recreating the fear and uncertainty endemic in the population at the time. Episodes comprise: 'By Order of the Fuhrer', 'The Librarian', 'After the Ball', 'Steel Hand from the Sea', 'The Laws and Usages of War', 'V for Victory', 'The Polish Affaire', 'Officers of the Law', 'The Jerry Bag', 'Treason', 'Pains and Penalties', 'The Prussian Officer' and 'Judgement of Solomon'.

I am a huge Alfred Burke fan and only bought this boxset because he headed the cast. However I have been more than impressed with the episodes included in this set.

The series revolves around the German occupation of the Channel Islands in World War II and the uneasy relationship between the invaders and the Islanders. This relationship is personalised for us in the exchanges between Dr. Martel (Bernard Horsfall) of the civil liasion committee and Major Richter (Alfred Burke)the Commanding German officer. We are also made aware of tensions within the respective sides of the divide. Dr Martel's daughter Clare (Emily Richards) is unhappy that her father has seen fit to serve on the civil liasion committee, viewing it as collaboration with the enemy. Major Richter has his own problems with Hauptsturmfuhrer Reinicke (Simon Cadell) of the Waffen SS. Richter knows only too well that Reinicke is really a spy for his SS masters in Berlin and yet has to try and work with him as best he can. There are some thought provoking episodes in this series such as 'After the Ball' and 'The Jerrybag'. These two episodes deal with the taboo of relationships between German soldiers and local women and the dire consequences for some of the individuals involved. Other subjects touched upon are the black market in which locals and occupiers alike buck the system to make a profit; treason involving a German general and a plot to topple Hitler; as well as depicting the inevitable privations of war.

With fine performances from Alfred Burke and Bernard Horsfall, I must also mention John Malcolm who is marvellous as the pragmatic 'detective' Oberleutnant Kluge.

This is a top quality drama about the German occupation of the Channel Island of Guernsey during World War II. It deals with the day to day realities of co-existence with the enemy.
At times this is a bleak and brutal series with issues such as rape, harsh military justice (meted out to both sides) and isolation. It is extremely well written and acted, particularly by the always excellent Alfred Burke (check out the series 'Public Eye' and watch Burke's superb portrayal of Enquiry Agent Frank Marker) as island commandant Major Richter. Simon Cadell as the devious and thoroughly unpleasant SS officer and John Malcolm as the head of the German Police Force are particularly good.
This series' best features are its accuracy and honesty; you get the impression this is how people on both sides WOULD react in these circumstances. Very highly recommended.

This maybe a war-time drama, but for us half the enjoyment was reliving the first time we watched it - in 1978. The stories are gritty and balanced, and overall it was excellent, particularly considering it was made nearly 30 years ago. We will now buy the second series.

"Enemy at the Door," a British television series, was made in the late 1970's, once again for Britain's independent television stations (ITV). It ran for two seasons on ITV, from 1978-1980, and was broadcast in the U.S. on public television. It combines two highly popular genres, period drama and World War II history. Series 1 comes in a four DVD box set, comprising 13 episodes, running approximately 663 minutes, with special features including historical background. Unfortunately, it does not include subtitles that would be most welcome in a series of this nature, with such varied accents; still, it is possible to follow the action well enough.

The series deals with the British Channel Islands that were invaded and occupied by the Nazi German army in June, 1940: Germany thought they would be a good jumping-off point for its planned invasion of the British Isles themselves. We now know that invasion was never to come, as, in the Battle of Britain, the British managed to inflict substantial enough losses on the vaunted German air force, the Luftwaffe, so as to disable it from supporting such an invasion. Still, the Channel Islands, although they then became a forgotten backwater of the war, were occupied for five years, almost until the end of the war, and British and Germans had to manage to live together.

Alfred Burke (Public Eye - The Complete 1969 Series [DVD]) stars as Major Reichter, Commanding officer of the occupying forces; Bernard Horsfell(
