Product description

Product Description

This release of Endeavour features the full 98 minute cut as shown on ITV1. The difference between this edition and the previously released version is an 'additional' 9 minutes to the run-time which now includes the sub-plot about secret government investigations going on in parallel to Morse's murder inquiry and also the bitter/sweet exit of D.S Lott.

I would have given this 5 stars but having just received the dvd this morning, I noticed after watching it all the way through that certain edits have been made from the film that was shown on ITV a few days ago!!! They have missed out the scene at the end where the MP is given a 'choice' as how to continue with his career after his dealings with the young girl in question in the episode. Plus various other scenes seem to have gone awol from this dvd. So my question is why? Are these people to be seen again in a new series and therefore we can't have them written out in the pilot? It seems a shame not to sell this dvd as it was seen on television!!!

Just a small gripe but I would have liked what was transmitted and not what they want us to see!!!

The acting was superb by all the cast and the young Endeavour did Morse proud!! But like I say, it was excellent but....

Probably like a whole bunch of other people, I was prepared to watch this with my mind already made up. i.e. it would be rubbish, a cash-in spin off and ruin the memories that I have of the original series. What a real surprise and what an excellent production. This reminds you once again of what good TV can be like. Your other reviewers have said it all with all the neat touches and references of things that were to come in the 'future' for Morse and like them, I won't spoil it for anyone that has not seen this yet. Quality TV with a quality cast many of whom had appeared in different roles in the Morse series. I am hoping that the people that make this 'one off' will read the reviews and I am sure they will realise that there is the potential for a series of Endeavour in it's own right.

... but not sure why this shorter version was released at all given the fact that iTV now has the full version -- with the extra nine minutes edited from this version -- being released only days later (and the one listed here seems to be no longer available). The longer version is even less expensive than the one here. Many of the reviews of this disc have pointed out that this one isn't the full version shown earlier in the year on television. Apparently the television version is being released after all on 26 January. Many of us who bought this version would have waited the extra few days if we had known.

[Update: Amazon seems somewhat confused by the two versions. I wrote this review about the shorter version and Amazon has moved my review so it appears not only under the shorter version but under the longer version as well. Ignore any of the reviews, including mine, that talk about edits unless you are looking at the shorter version. The longer version includes the bits everyone is talking about having been edited out so those comments do not apply to the longer version (the full, uncut version) being released on 26 January.]

I thought we had exhausted all possible ways to keep Morse going, but Endeavour actually manage to make it fresh again (might be the period setting). I really liked Shaun Evans as young Morse and if you're a fan of British crime drama, this one is a must for you.

Not sure how many variations of this pilot episode do exist. Purchased box set; thoroughly enjoyed all prequel episodes. Product description for this pilot version indicates it is extended to 98 minutes. Pilot episode within the box set [Pilot with Series 1-4] is identical to this 'stand alone' copy. No need to make this purchase if you already own the 98 minute version.

I hope this series will take off, I like the way Shaun Evans has portrayed the young Morse, he obviously researched the original portrayal by John Thaw and has tried to give us a peek into how the older Morse became what he was. A very mature performance by a young actor. I enjoyed the pilot and first series very much and I hope we get some more.

Disappointed in that much of the original TV program had been removed. The character Dempsey was entirely erased thus removing any reference to the sinister machinations of Harold Wilson's government. Consequently the reference to Harold is no longer there (which stamped the decade of these events). I will, in future be relying on my copies of the original TV programmes and will not purchase any more of these DVDs.
