The End of Gender: Debunking the Myths About Sex and Identity in Our Society Hardcover – 4 Aug. 2020

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 1,531 ratings

International sex researcher, neuroscientist, and columnistDebra Soh debunks popular gender myths in this research-based, scientific examination of the many facets of gender identity.

Is our gender something we’re born with, or are we conditioned by society? In
The End of Gender, neuroscientist and sexologist Dr. Debra Soh uses a research-based approach to address this hot-button topic, unmasking popular misconceptions about the nature vs. nurture debate and exploring what it means to be a woman or a man in today’s society.

Both scientific and objective, and drawing on original research and carefully conducted interviews, Soh tackles a wide range of issues, such as gender-neutral parenting, gender dysphoric children, and the neuroscience of being transgender. She debates today’s accepted notion that gender is a social construct and a spectrum, and challenges the idea that there is no difference between how male and female brains operate.

The End of Gender is a conversation-starting work that will challenge what you thought you knew about gender, identity, and everything in between. Timely, informative, and provocative, it will arm you with the facts you need to come to your own conclusions about gender identity and its place in the world today.

This is the most important book on the science of sex, including gender, that you will ever read. It's a breathe of fresh air to anyone who's been confused by the gender activists of the past thirteen years.

It confirms that gender is not a social construct but is an aspect of biological sex. It confirms there are only two genders: female and male. It confirms that a small number of people have atypical bodies but these do not create new sex or gender categories.

It shows how the world of science has been hijacked by gender activists in the greatest scandal of the century. It demonstrates the fragility of science and the weaknesses of our institutions in defending science. It demonstrates how social media has been used to trash the reputations of our best scientists and medics.

Chapter 3 will introduce you to a confusing array of current gender terminology. Chapter 7 will clear your mind of all the rubbish that's been put there by years of misinformation and obfuscation.

The book's index is comprehensive, making it very useful for defining the array of terms used in the book.

Although I disagree with the views on gender expressed by Debra Soh (being pro- social constructivism and symbolic interactionist), I have found this text to be fascinating and informative. It provides a rationale and some evidence for the belief in gender as biological. This has already proven useful material for my PhD thesis.

However, more valuable is that it offers plausible insights into how leftist ideologies (such as my own) can come across within contentious issues. Despite seemingly being polar opposites in terms of our views on gender, I would urge people to read this book. Very well written.

A very informative text with well-backed-up facts. If you are bemused by the current gender debates, this will offer some clarity.
The media want to label the author as transphobic, but anyone who reads the book will see that she is very sympathetic to their plight, but extremely critical of the misrepresentation of the issues that we see in the media every day.
The book would have benefitted from a little more editing, as it does ramble a bit, but it still addresses the questions every parent should be asking.
There are several things I disagree with, but overall a fair picture of the issues and how to have a reasoned debate with any activists you may have the misfortune to meet.

This book by Dr Soh is fascinating and really gives good baseline information about gender is or is not , and about other topics in the world of sexology, written in a gracious and humorous way, and in some cases in frustration about how some people are receiving biological information. Recommended.

This is an utterly fantastic book, not only claiming to be based on research evidence, but providing the raw sources (citations) at each stage. An exemplar of good science that the academic world needs to start refollowing.

If like me, you are curious about the difference between gender and sex; or wonder about statements that there are a thousand genders; or whether transitioning is the right thing for children; or where to stand on JK Rowling and the trans debate; then I urge you to read this book. The author, Dr Debra Soh, is a former academic, turned journalist. Therefore it is rigorously referenced, but is very readable. She has the facts of the matter – and can explain them. Morally courageous and admirably bold – if ever there was a book for this moment in time, it is this one. Please read it.

As an ally, I was sceptical that this was going to just be a TERF book. However, on reading I found this to be a book rooted in science. The author was sympathetic to trans people and their rights - but stated the science as it is, not as the woke left want it to be.

I would recommend this book to anyone who understands free speech needs balance in debate to benefit society.

I enjoyed reading this book as I wanted to learn a bit more about the modern interpretation of gender, as it seems to have been reinvented to interpret different ideas and understandings way beyond its original use. The book at times is a little confusing ( as is this whole gender debate ! ) but overall it helped me make my own conclusions and I was able to reassure myself that what my brain perceives is usually right.

A great book, a fresh take on the way science / academia has been represented lately. I like the information provided on both sides of the spectrum, and how balanced the author is.

5.0 out of 5 stars La ciencia por encima de la ideología
Reviewed in Mexico on 7 May 2022

5.0 out of 5 stars A good read about the myths of gender
Reviewed in the United States on 13 August 2021
Picked this book up because I've been mostly reading posts on users on Tumblr stating their 1000+ genders were 'real.' I wanted to do my research on the issue because there are misinformation on social media. I decided to read the book from Dr. Debra Soh, a sexologist who spent her time researching the topic. The book was concise and easy to read. It's not the most verbiage academia literature I've read, but it's effective in sending the message across to a young audience.

I don't agree with everything that was discussed with Debra Soh. Especially on Chapter 7, I don't agree that women shouldn't behave like men in sex and dating. I think it would be nice to have broader scope on different dynamic in relationships. Especially when women are entering high ranking position, I've noticed a change in power dynamics in relationship where the wife is the bread winner and the husband is a full time 'stay at home dad.' The husband's livelihood is dependent on his wife's income. The couple is still married and they had children together. I would like to see more research that goes out of boundaries of conventional gender norms in relationships where the power dynamic has shifted from the husband to the wife.

Otherwise, the book was worth the read for its insights and clarity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hacen falta más libros como este
Reviewed in Spain on 17 December 2023
