Patricia Loofbourrow's Red Dog Conspiracy is rapidly becoming addictively good. In addition to the main novels The Jacq of Spades and The Queen of Diamonds (plus the forthcoming The Ace of Clubs - but should that not be 'Clubbs'?) we have already had a prequel novella The Alcatraz Coup and now here is a short story, also detailing some history. Eleanora Bryce is a character in the main series and here we learn something of her early story and what brought her (back) to Bridges.
In a few short pages we learn about how Eleanora became widowed and how (and why) she returns to Bridges. We learn a little more about her surviving sons Herbert and David (both of whom feature in the main books) and there is passing mention of an unnamed enemy from her past. More importantly we also learn something more about the neoVictorian steampunk future America in which the books are set. The author has a facility with names - it can surely be no accident that the city in which Eleanora is reduced to penury is named Dickens? It is a refreshing change to have a story set outside the occasionally oppressive atmosphere of the domed city of Bridges (though I note from the introduction that Dickens is also domed... )
A splendid addition the series - I look forward to the next instalment.
This is a great collection of stories. I read Overdue Uprising first as the author is someone I have read before. Jason is still a fairly new to me author but I fell in love with his writing style. His characters tend to get their claws into you so much so you will lose yourself in the story and be with them every step of the way, even finding yourself crying as they do.
The book tells a short story of earth having been overrun by an alien force with any remaining humans being held as captives but longing for the day when freedom will be theirs or they have totally given up all hopes of escape.
The Seven have given promises of a freedom but at what costs to the remaining humans numbers, is it all just a dream, this place where they meet The Seven and learn special skills or is there just the smallest chance of it all being real with the very real hope of escape. When would this happen & more importantly how, where can they go where they need no longer be afraid.
This is a really great story, it leaves you wanting more.
by Wendy Knight
I only got this boxset as I wanted to read Wendy Knights book
This is the prequel to With These Wings by Wendy Knight, this is the story of Phoenyx and Cole and how they survived an alien invasion, starvation and fear. When a new alien arrives and wants to take all the women and make them beautiful, only one problem they would be made to look like themselves, their DNA would change and they would form wings.
Phoenyx, Enika and Cole were now on the run from both sets of Aliens and it was taking their tole on them until Phoenyx saved Enika from being caught and got caught herself.
We see how Phoenyx changed and how she survived the torture from these new aliens and then escaped to search for Cole and Enika.
I loved this story and hope to see more in this series.
