The book gives step by step directions with pictures. It presents techniques for painting beaches, hills, waterfalls, fields, clouds, mist, pathways, etc. Although there is a section on color in the book, it is not consistently discussed in the step by step instructions for the different techniques. The use of ceramic stucco, wax resists, salt crystals, and sponges are introduced. As a beginner in watercolor, this book is one of my favorites.

I love this instructional book for just that reason. It shows me just how to accomplish the varied techniques used to create my landscape painting. I enjoy the vibrancy with which Ms. Soan paints. This book would be a good choice for the beginning watercolor artist.

I was disappointed in this book. There seemed to be a lot of emphasis on various "tricks" like masking fluid and salt crystals. There didn't seem to be many new or fresh ideas to inspire me.

HASH(0x9da8af48) out of 5 stars HELP FOR THE BEGINNING WATERCOLORIST 30 Dec. 2010

I had so many times checked this book out from my library that I decided I needed this book at HOME. The author has done a great job in leading me from one technique to the next teaching me how to create different landscapes; trees, mountains, water, mist, sun and more. I was so impressed with the author's work that I checked to see if she had written other art instruction books. Guess what! She has and I found her under Hazel Soan and Hazel Harrison. Her books rate 5 stars in my book.

Covers most of the subjects the artist must master to be able to render landscapes well. Very down-to-earth advice for the beginning or intermediate watercolorist.
