neatly laid out into chapters of relevance, nicely illustrated with big glossy photos, nothing squeamish or dark, so dont panic ... just a very well informed, neatly put together and concise encyclopaedia. If your looking for spells.. forget it.
If your looking for a clear concise history , explanations, and theories for different forms of magical beliefs etc, then this is your book. At best, it will inform and educate you , at worst... it will make the vicars wife leave her hobnobs and go screaming off over the hills.. before shes even looked at it properly ;)

This book was great, it covered a wide range of topics and i feel that it went into enough detail on each subject for me to have gained a good basic understanding. Not ideal for someone who already knows the basics though.

HASH(0x8e504540) out of 5 stars The Best Reference Work on the Subject 16 April 2011
By George Sand - Published on Amazon.com
This book is a rare find. No aspect of the subject of magic, alchemy, and the history of witchcraft, now and then, is left uncovered. Superb illustrations, artwork, and rare photographs enrich the text. A fairly unusual photo of Alister Crowly and other explicit photos lend an air of enchantment. A treatment of Chaos Magic is included, which lifts the veil and leave no room for misinterpretation of this little-known practice. I highly recommend this book for anyone seriously undertaking the study of this branch of religion for the purpose of understanding.

I used to borrow this book all the time from my library and I finally decided to buy it here. I bought the softcover version which is really good quality, considering this is a large book. If you are interested in the history of magic and all the different types from around the globe then this is a good book for you.
