Product description

Product Description

Left-field trumpeter Rory Simmons leads his tricksy, brilliant, ten piece Fringe Magnetic. Featuring musicians from the innovative LOOP collective, as well as those from classical and folk traditions, Fringe Magnetic brings together gritty rhythmic counterpoint laced with words from Norway. Skidding strings and chorale like winds, the chamber ensemble within the group weave intricate melodies juxtaposed with the twisted ambience of contemporary song. Vocalists Elisabeth Nygaard and Andrew Plummer lend the ensemble a mesmeric darkness which converges in a mix of New-York downtown, 20th century contemporary classical and skewed verse. Fringe Magnetic aims to fuse chamber, orchestral palettes and shapes with the vibrant energy of cutting edge jazz and improvised music and the ensemble features some of the most exciting and dynamic young musicians from the London jazz, classical and improvised scene. On Fringe Magnetic, Simmons draws on the jaggedy free-imrpov of Tim Berne, with the hypnotic pastoral beauty of Christian Wallumrod as well as the quirkiness of Django Bates and Hanne Hukkelberg. The resulting album is a startling, powerfully compelling work that draws you into Simmons alternate musical world where NY downtown jazz, Scandi-jazz darkness and English whimsy combine to provide something fresh and new.

A wintry chill coexists with springtime vivacity, intricate arrangements with improvised passages. -- allaboutjazz.com

It's quite gorgeous with some tremendous writing from trumpeter Rory Simmons. -- Jazz UK, Feb/March 2010

The 10-piece Fringe Magnetic is one of the most ambitious genre-bending enterprises operating under the umbrella of London's Loop Collective - *** -- John Fordham, The Guardian, 05/02/2009

The young London-based ten-piece Fringe Magnetic make merry in the spaces between jazz and contemporary classical...amid the igenuity, a propulsive rhythm section keeps the show moving - *** -- John Bungey, The Times
