Following the critcally acclaimed The Turning Point, a move into the delicate terrain of all acoustic and drummerless blues (and a cracking live album to boot!), Empty Rooms features the same musicians and follows, for the most part, a similar musical thread - albeit with some electric tracks.
One of The Turning Point's oustanding contributors was Jon Mark, whose fingerpicking guitar playing is immediately apparent on Empty Rooms' opening track, 'Don't Waste My Time', an energetic country-blues kick off and probably the best song on the album. Other highlights include 'To A Princess', with a memorable Stephen Thompson bass solo, the maudlin, homesick 'Counting The Days' and possibly the most un-Mayall track Mayall ever wrote 'Don't Pick A Flower, which actually has quite a stunningly beautiful melody.
A star gets deducted for 'Lying In My Bed', a quite execrable spoken word blues about John lying next to a girl who is sleeping in his bed; he basically wants his wicked way, but there is something a bit cringe worthy about the way it is delivered.
A truly unique album all in all, John could still pull in top musicians at this point and indeed for the next five years or so, before dropping off the studio radar for quite some time. Some of the themes are definitely of its era, but great music does not age which is the best compliment I can pay to Empty Rooms.

5.0 out of 5 stars still good... 25 July 2013

I agree with the others, if you are a Mayall, fan particularly around Turning Point.
you must have this. that being said Jon Mark and Johnny Almond are worth the price of admission but throw in Steven Thompson and the no drummer turning point blend we have another winner.
while the tunes are not as strong nor the sequencing as spot on as Turning Point, there are still some fantastic musical moments.
" Waiting for the Right Time " on closing side one shows Almond at his best,
not the energy of " Thoughts About Roxanne " but soulfully every bit as good. the band is in the studio and lacks the desire to please the audience, no not that it's energy gotten from performing live.
every bit of it worth havng, but the mood is not typical Mayall. as one reviewer said, somber...

Recorded after Mick Taylor left it is a return to a more acoustic, soulful angle of leaving home to tour.

I heard this first when I was 14 years old. Had not heard it since. It must have made an impression or I would not have remembered the title. It was nostalgic to hear it.
