I bought this after reading the positive reviews left and I have to say a big thankyou to the reviewers for recommending a great remote device. Very simple setup on a windows 7 PC. This remote adds to the windows media experience with all buttons responding well. The ability to point the remote in any direction and still function flawlessly is an added bonus. Another nice touch is that the remote works whilst using other applications and WMC is minimized. My only gripe is the range of the RF signal, I achieved a max of 5m through walls and will be experimenting with positioning the USB dongle in a more favourable position away from the PC with an USB extension lead. (If anyone has done this a review would be useful) I can only ditto the comments left in the other 5 star reviews, go ahead and buy it, you won't be dissapointed.

I was so impressed when I first used the Emprex remote with Win 7 Media Centre. It was easy to install, literally plug-in and play! The real plus was the wireless technology. I have been diappointed with some infra red remote controls that were too directional. The Emprex with it's wireless communication works even when you are facing away from the USB receiver, and the small receiver can be discreetly plugged into a free slot on the back of your PC.

This remote is specifically designed for use with Windows Media Centre and is simple to use. It even has an on/off button. In pactice this is best set up to bring your computer in and out of "sleep", but even that can save you having to get up from the sofa immediately.

So why disappointing ??

Well, I bought mine in February 2010 and it stopped working in October 2011.

It was obviously outside of the 12 month guarantee, but it seemed a short life when compared with other remote controls ... so I contacted Amazon, who provided contact details for the manufacturer/distributor. (Well done Amazon!!)

Sadly, I have had no reply from Emprex. So I replaced my remote with an infra-red version from another manufacturer, which is one of the better infra-red type (you can point it in any direction, as long as it has line of sight to the receiver). It also has the added bonus of a built in mouse control. Like they say "every cloud has a silver lining ... ... ..."

Works well with the Media Center on Windows 7, though not necessarily straight out of the box.
You do need to install the utility that is supplied on a mini-cd. This enables the alph-numeric keypad which you need if you decide to install the Media Center Sky Player (may also be needed for other MCE functions, but I haven't noticed).
My only gripe is with the numeric keypad itself. The letters/numbers are printed underneath the corresponding (very thin) buttons. For some reason, whenever I use these buttons I end up pressing the wrong button, fooled into thinking the letters/numbers are printed above the button. Not sure why this is, perhaps we've all got used to telephone buttons with the letters/numbers printed on the button itself and when they're not, the brain automatically adjusts.......or pehaps I'm just terminally stupid! But when you do press the correct button, it works fine.
As other reviewers have said, you cannot use the remote for other Windows functions, so you need to set-up Media Center first to a) start automatically and b) be always on top. I use a Remote Desktop connection (Win7 Pro/Ultimate) to conduct other functions, but you could equally connect a separate mouse/keyboard.

I have had this remote control for just over 3 months now and I have to say I am impressed.

Installation was a breeze and - unlike IR remote controllers - you do not have to have line of sight access for it to work. The remote performs 100% reliably and I like the clicky feel of the buttons. Works well with Windows 7 Media Centre.

TAKE NOTE! Although most of the remote's functions work without installing anything (Windows 7 provides most of the drivers) if you want to be able to use the number buttons to enter letters (e.g to jump to the music album or artist in Media Centre) then you have to use the mini CD that comes with the remote to install entries into the registry. The process is painless (just click on an installer icon) and after a reboot of the PC you now have a fully functional remote control!

Only minus point is that it may eat batteries. I am on my second set after the first ones (supplied with the remote) died after 3 months use. Having said that the original batteries were of an unknown make. Time will tell I guess, however the remote loses a 5 star review in view of this. Still a recommended purchase!

I have had 2 of these and the first one I loved and worked exactly how you would expect, however after heavy use the remote decided that none of the buttons would work anymore except the MCE button, so I bought another expecting the same only to be truly disappointed because it would sit there sending and receiving a signal running the battery down very quickly (though rechargeable they were high power and brand new), less than a week! Also it would loose it's pairing (which is why I think it was sending and receiving signals trying to repair) which meant it was useless.

I bought this remote to replace my official MCE remote and having had it for three days have had to return it for a refund!
A small USB dongle is used (rather than an infra red receiver) which should be a positive, but the reception on this remote is TERRIBLE. Missed keypresses, delays in performing a given action, lack of accuracy are all major let dows of this device.
To make matters worse, if you are used to using triple-tap for text entry in Windows media center (i.e. similar to that on a mobile phone) for quick text entry THIS DOES NOT WORK ON THIS REMOTE!

On the plus side, you do get two AAA duracell batteries ;)
