Nothing quite comes close to the awe and suspense created by this masterpiece from the creators of Wing Commander! The missions are challenging, dynamic, and most of all, FUN! This game is fun to play, especially with a Dual Shock style gamepad or a joystick, but if you don't possess these items, don't let that put you off, as you can always use the fail-safe, the keyboard!
You start out as a volunteer for the Western Alliance, who are set upon in a cowardly and destructive move by the Eastern Coalition, which renders the French and Italian fleets helpless. And worse still, the commander of a Coalition vessel orders the survivors of the attack to be executed.
Beginning as a member of a Volunteer, you progress steadily through the game, until you reach your own elite status. The dynamics of the game are what make this unique, because if you don't destroy a Coalition 'nanny' ship coming to retrieve your captain's lifepod, you don't fail the mission, you just have to face the ship later on!
If you like this masterpiece, then check out Freelancer, the 'sequel' of this game, with improved visuals, and easier flight controls!

Starlancer is an excellent retro game that nevertheless appears to work almost perfectly with Windows 8.1. The only problem so far experienced is that opening the locker to view the character's medals causes a crash. Since this is an entirely non-essential feature and one in which I am not interested, I'm not even taking a star off. Maybe half a star. This genre of game was almost completely dead but is well worth playing now with the upcoming advent of the crowd funded Star Citizen - get yourself some flying hours!

A great space sim.
In the future, the Eastern Coalition has signed a peace treaty with the Western Alliance. Just as the Alliance is taken off alert the Coalition strikes, destroying much of the Alliance military and takes over Earth in a coup. You, as a member of the 45th Volunteers Alliance Squadron, must fight the evil Coaltion for the good of the Alliance!
Great. Missions are dynamic, and your actions affect the later missions (fail to destroy that ship? It will be back to haunt you). The missions are also not so simple as sucess/failure. You can do it Great, Good, Bad, or Fail, in effect. You can loadout missiles on your ship.
The controls take some getting used to but once you get used to them they're great.
Graphics and sound:
Still not as dated as you may think.
There is lag is multiplayer, but by a clever innovation it does not affect the game. It pauses the game during lag, which is minimal. No more ghost ships and phantom lasers.

WHY do all of the new games that look no better than starlancer require such hefty pc specs when GEMS like this one require nothing at all? This game still looks great and plays wonderfully.

Freespace 2 is regarded as the daddy of space combat but, IT HAS NO COCKPIT VIEW. Starlancer HAS a cockpit view and to me it gives this game the edge. Graphics, sound, story and controls are all great but.....NO MODS.

Why a game as polished as this has no mods is a crime.Freelacer, the sequal to this has a great starwars mod 'Freeworlds' that really should have been given to Starlancer.Freelancer never felt as good with only a mouse control and i fear its now too late to hope for starlancer mods.

Anyhow,if you have not played this game then you really should.

the game is brill, once you master the controls and buttons(all forty of them) you won't want to stop, the gameplay and plot twists draw you into the game, trying to shoot a lead enemy character while he taunts you over the coms system, watch out for the last level, still not managed to beat it(so much for fair war) the enemy have a new weapon that you don't find out about in the game, just that you lost, give us starlancer two

This game as games go is ok. Not as good as freespace though. Still I would give it 4 stars if you could find out how to do simple things like firing missiles without going through the training missions. It is little things like this that shoot the rating down. Also dont get it if you dont have a gamepad or joystick
