Mandalay manage to sound like the combined pure vocal power of Liz Fraser (Cocteau Twins) with a magical music freshness rarely heard in Electronic music.
They meld feelings of passion, beauty and innocence, leaving you drifting on a sea of enthusiasm for fulfilling all your desires.
Melodies this breathtakingly powerful should be heard from a good hifi, to let you enjoy their sheer depth and dexterity.
The only downside to this excellent album is that the track 'Beautiful' is only presented here in album format (a nicely pared down, more acoustic sounding number) and not it's more orchestrated single edit as well.
Get into Mandalay now before your friends, they will love you for bringing this into their lives.

This is pure sweetness and shimmering beauty, but it gets too much after a while! Nicola Hitchcock has an unusual voice - soprano but with a lot of vibrato, which is quite lovely - and the music is ethereal. I think the main problem is that the album is mainly very negative, and after a while the tearful vulnerability wears thin, just like a friend who won't stop complaining about a boyfriend but never even tries to do anything to make things better! The second album, Instinct, gets the balance much better.

At the time I purchased this I had never heard of Mandalay. Imagine then my surprise when I found it to be such a stunningly good album. The production is top class and really helps to bring out all the sensitivity in Nicola Hitchcocks quite unusal voice. However this works on many levels, and while not every song on this album is quite as good as it's best tracks, the standard is incredibly high throughout. 'This Life', 'Kissing The Day' and 'Beautiful' are all CLASSICS and how this album failed to caputure the heart of the nation astounds me. If you like emotional, sensitive and atmospheric trip hop (with a dash of classical) you will LOVE THIS. Why not treat yourself NOW!

Empathy is a collection of absolutely striking, incredible music. For true music lovers or people with a lot of patience, this is a must-have. Many people, however, will not enjoy much of Mandalay's style because it is very slow and polished. One review I read put it nicely: "Think of a table polishing competition. Then think of Mandalay."
All in all, my all-time favorite collection....
