This is the starting point for the glorious journey that is the music of the Avett Borthers strung out over nearly 10 albums and more miles racked up touring that an Eddie Stobart artic lorry. Emotionalism is a mature, confident and most all complete album from the Brothers out of Concord, North Carolina. Briming with gem after gem and the stock in trade Avett mix of banjos, newgrass, high energy, excellent sonwriting/singing and Beatles style pop songs, "Emotionalism" is a high water mark and the one which many in the "Avett Nation" see as the bands best. The album flows effortlessly with Scott and Seth Avett singing with raw emotion and passion. There is little room for few subtlety here; this is truly "hearts worn on the sleeves" material and a celebration of unselfconscious passion. If you like bittersweet rootsy alt-country pop-rock that touches references like The Beatles, the Burrito Bros and Chopin thrown in for good measure get your credit card out.

There is a cohesiveness to this album that's missing from some of the others. It has that Avetts' jagged edge but at the same time shows that their song writing skills have gone up a gear. "The Weight of Lies" which is one of their greatest songs appears like a traditional "let me give you some advice" country ballad but has so much depth you could dive into it, as the Brothers counsel that "I'm not sure I bought those words/When I was young I knew most everything/But these words have never meant so much to anyone/as they now mean to me". "Pretty girl from Chile" starts out as gorgeous Gram Parsons style country lament and ends as a latin fuelled, hand-clapping, foot-stomper.

I bought this album after hearing the song DIE DIE DIE once on radio 2000 in South Africa. I immediately tried to find the album. The main thing the Avett's have is wonderful voices. The 2 brothers are beautiful singers who sometimes sing in harmony, sometimes together and sometimes octaves apart. The up-tempo numbers are especially passionate and raw. I love the way that the songs are filled with sparse backing (guitar, upright bass and a banjo) most of the time. If you like The Jayhawks or the Beatles, you might love the Avett Brothers. Passionate, fun, lots of harmony and above all EMOTIONAL.

I am by no means an 'Americana' fan, but heard an Avett Brothers track on local radio and bought this CD.

All I can say is its amazing. Fantastic lyrics, harmonies - have since bought the rest of the back catalogue. My mates are bored hearing me raving about this band................
