This debut book by Kathryn Gauci is comparable to a master crafted tapestry. Beautifully woven history of Greek and Turkish families spanning almost a century and a half during the very volatile and difficult times of the two countries. It is written with a most insightful knowledge of these two cultures and also of the almost lost art of embroidery. Stunning and very real descriptions of settings in Greece and Turkey with the characters larger than life. Just an absolutely wonderful history lesson. I look forward to the next book.
A tragic family story intricately woven into the complex and violent politics of the setting. It brought a new perspective on familiar history and I can still feel the luxurious fabrics and taste the food so richly portrayed.
