Christmas presents from our American relations were always glamorous, but no present was as much loved and used as this book. After my sister was sent it, she shared it with me for the next decade, copying the animals in it and using it to make up our own. It breaks each animal (and bird, insect, reptile etc.) into its constituent parts and shows you how they should be put together to make the complete creature. As far as I remember, the dedication showed a picture of Emberley as a child with the caption 'For the boy I was, the book I could not find' and I always felt sorry for that little boy, waiting to grow up so that he could write the book for which he was waiting. I am now buying it for my godchildren and finally, thirty years on, I'm getting my own copy. I still draw sheep the way Ed Emberley taught me.

This is a nice wholesome, book for kids to enjoy which provides hundreds of fun, simple drawing templates , in step by step form, for fun depictions of animals, which are a little more caricature than purely realistic.

While at an adult friend's birthday party in a pub not so long back, I noticed someone's 7 year old daughter was engaged very quietly and productively in a drawing book on her own, and thought it would be a good and absorbing book for my own daughter ( who also happens to love animals- perhaps they all do?)

It has that slightly old school, 'sesame street'-ish charm to it which is uncomplicated, lo tech and fun.

Unlike some activity books which get written in, or the stickers used up etc, this book is designed to be copied onto your own paper so has the potential to be used again and again, and become a good 'go-to' book when you need to engage your child in something fun.

She has loved it right from the start so I can only recommend it.

I remember owning and using this book constantly when I was a kid. I recently got it for my two young ones and now they are drawing all the time! They would get so frustrated when they couldn't make something look like it was supposed to, but with this book it is easy and teaches them about using basic shapes to draw anything. It is so easy to follow, my two are both five and are doing great! Looking forward to getting some more of his books for my kids to use and enjoy.

Fantastic book, I still draw the elephants like this. Got it in America when I was nine back in 1980, didn't know it's still in print.

Ed Emberly's Drawing Book of Animals is a book that crosses age barriers. Whether you are a kindergarten student or an adult who has a phobia about drawing anything, with this book you can achieve success. I have used this book in my kindergarten classroom with great results. All my students thought they could draw anything and I found out by following the simple directions that I could too. I highly recommend this book as a gift to your young friends. Make it a complete gift with a pack of colored pens or pencils and a pad. Will keep them occupied for hours. It is good family fun for all to sit around the table and draw together. Even older kids quit feeling self conscious about their drawing and begin to enjoy creating a picture that looks like what they want it to look like. Now if you don't have any kids in mind don't let that stop you. If you know someone who does crafts, or needlework they will enjoy it too. Many ideas for decoration. Check out Ed Emberly's other titles too. Each book is based on the same principle of reducing all pictures into the basic shapes and lines we all can draw when we doodle. Ed makes your doodles into something else. Art!

Much thinner and flimsier than expected (bought as a birthday gift and ended up having to 'pad out' with other things). But my four year old seemed immediately interested in it before wrapped up to take to the party. So may buy another for his own birthday!

A very simple method of drawing great looking animals. My daughter loves it and takes it to school with her every day in her book bag on the off-chance that it might rain and she'll get to do some drawing. Highly recommended.
