Product description

Review

'Clare Beaton is another perennial favourite of mine. She provides beautifully stitched felt and bric-a-brac illustrations for a range of Barefoot titles. The latest, Elusive Moose, packs in a lot of information about the animal kingdom and even has a stitched guide to their tracks.' --Nicola Smyth, The Independent on Sunday

'The beautifully simple fabric collages perfectly complement this gentle story through the northern lands with its animals.' --Angels & Urchins

About the Author

Joan Gannij began her career as a writer/photographer, rock and roll disc jockey and creator of two syndicated radio talk shows. Born in New York and raised in Hollywood, she worked on both coasts before relocating to Amsterdam in 1987, where she currently resides as a writer and part-time teacher of creative writing at a local college. Brought up with the idea that travel is the best education, Joan says my life has been enriched by my travels and all of the fascinating people and places that I have encountered. This is apparent in her recent work as she s authored a number of travel guides on northern countries such as Finland, Norway, the Baltic States, and Iceland. Along with exhibiting her collection of photography, she has also authored three books of poetry and prose. Elusive Moose (2006) is her first project for Barefoot Books Clare Beaton worked at the BBC for eight years, illustrating on many children's television programmes. She is now highly sought-after creator of handcrafted children's picture books. Clare has had nearly fifty books published, including One Moose, Twenty Mice (Barefoot Books, 1998) and Mother Goose Remembers (Barefoot Books, 2000), both of which have attracted considerable praise.

I love this book, and I've bought an extra copy (on request) for my mother, who is 78. neither of us have young children, it's just a great little book with such sweetly home made illustrations.

oh, and I imagine kids would really like it, too.

Really great book, one of two that our 17 month old now requests. Funny, she doesn't seem to have a word for cat yet, but can say "Moose". Wonderful little book, nice rhyming, a nice read for both of us. Fun finding the moose on the pages, and little one is learning the animals.

I'd recommend this as a gift, as I'm not sure how many people know about this book, so chances are it would be unique!

I discovered Clare Beaton's illustration work a couple of years ago and since then, I've bought her books whenever I see a new one. She uses felt, vintage fabrics and haberdashery oddments to create very detailed images, and as a fabric junkie, I could spend hours poring over the ways in which she uses her materials.

Elusive Moose is rich with detail. She takes her reader through North American landscapes, searching for moose, which are 'hidden' on every page, and along the way, encounters beavers, wild horses, and Artic Hares. There are other hidden details to look out for, though: on each page, she adds a subtle reminder of the presence of the child narrator - a dropped daisy chain, a footprint, a lost mitten. My son is 11 months and loves turning the pages, but I know that when he's older he'll get a lot of pleasure from spotting these hidden details too.

We borrowed this book from our local library and my 1 year old daughter loved it so much that we bought a copy. The storyline is simple and easy to follow and the illustrations are just exquisite. I love the way you move through the seasons as you read it and I hope that it inspires her when she is older to be inventive in art. Beautiful!
