Product description

Review

"For anyone interested in technology, entrepreneurship or the price of greatness, Ashlee Vance's new book is a tremendous look into arguably the world's most important entrepreneur. Vance paints an unforgettable picture of Musk's unique personality, insatiable drive and ability to thrive through hardship. The book bursts with telling anecdotes and quotes that illuminate who Musk is" (The Washington Post)

"Exhaustively reported . . . this work will likely serve as the definitive account of a man whom so far we've seen mostly through caricature. By the final pages, too, any reader will sense the need to put comparisons to Steve Jobs aside. Give Musk credit. There is no one like him" (New York Times)

"A book that is smart, light on its feet and possesses a crunchy thoroughness. . . . Mr Vance delivers a well-calibrated portrait of Mr Musk, so that we comprehend both his friends and his enemies. It's a book with many ancillary pleasures. Mr Vance brings us up to date on the states of green energy and space launches. He also veers away from his subject just often enough, offering profiles of the frequently brilliant people who work alongside Mr Musk. The best thing Mr Vance does in this book, though, is tell Mr Musk's story simply and well" (The New York Times)

"Ashlee Vance’s stellar biography captures Musk’s remarkable life story and irrepressible spirit" (Richard Branson)

"This is an entertaining read for anybody who wants to get into the mind of this hyperactive entrepreneur who bounces between being eccentric, obnoxious and a genius." (The Times)

Having been interested in Elon Musk and especially SpaceX for the last couple of years, I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book. I always wondered how Musk actually managed to do it all, and not only once with SpaceX, but also with Tesla and to a slightly lesser extent SolarCity. This book by Ashlee Vance manages to provide a nice enough insight into an extremely dedicated and, lets be honest, at times egomaniacal and ruthless entrepreneur who it seems doesn't sleep and only works, works, works and expects others to do the same.

I managed to read the book within three days, a testimony to its style and the ease of writing. I did notice a particular brand of, possibly, American West Coast technological and capitalistic evangelism and worship with plenty of self-references by the author and a tendency to opinionate on Musks actions. From personal tastes, found this a bit too self-aggrandizing. However, the book is about Elon Musk after all, and in this sense, it shines. Plenty of quotes, interviews with family and close friends, most of them cool, others not so much. As one reviewer pointed out before, the books lacks a bit on the factual background on SpaceX and Tesla, and relies more on a personal take on some technological and business advancements and crucial events.

Personally, I walked away from the book with a bit less respect for Musk - not for what he has done, nor what he stands for as a person, but in his sometimes brutal ways in dealing with other people and lack of empathy. It is a less flattering picture, but one that is well painted by Vance thanks to his research in the upbringing of Musk in South Africa and his early days in North America. Thanks to Vance to giving me this insight. Will keep following SpaceX and Musk with great interest in the next couple of years.

Great read, not really a nice guy but, fascinating; driven; revolutionary; visionary, definitely.
His unusual upbringing gives some insight into his incredible capacity for risk taking.

This book is well written and gives a good picture of Elon and his amazing life. I can recommend it unreservedly.

Details:

Interesting information on his early family life, how he made his first fortune and used it as a springboard for his incredibly bold plans to help humanity.

Someone who wants to change the world for the better, but is hyper-competitive and hyper-logical.

The stories behind Spacex and Tesla are also engrossing and thrilling.

The information on his personal life revealing.

If you want to know the story of the business man of the moment, this is a good book. Don't expect, however, an effort from the writer to go beyond the surface of the most controversial aspects of his life: his father, his divorce, his relationship issues with employees in every company he has worked in... The most interesting parts were overlooked leaving me a feeling that the author was just scratching the surface, the superfluous, the obvious.

In my opinion, this is a book written by a fan. That's probably why Elon accepted to be interviewed by the writer even though he was reluctant at first. Ashlee Vance should have been much more curious about certain aspects of his life, just the way Walter Isaacson was with Steve Jobs, a much better biography.

Very easy and exciting read and hard to put down! Elon Musk is an extraordinary human and I think this book conveys his mission very well. To be honest I think my whole outlook on the world has shifted a bit since reading this book. It makes you realise that most people are really not concerned beyond the mundane, and that if we are going to survive as a species we are going to need a new model for business, government and a load more visionaries like Musk. Long live Musk! Great book please read it!

Excellent read. It not only shows the extradinary capabilities of this man that the media brands him as, but this book also clearly depicts the "ugly" wins he had in his past which he had taken full credit for. Like the time he was ousted as ceo of PayPal, or he was not allowed to be ceo of his first company zip 2, or the early management problems of tesla. But a win is a win, whether "fairy tale" like or not. This man is a true hero.

This is a fascinating and well written biography, telling the story of Elon Musk's almost incomprehensible achievement. The biography is written in a balanced way so it feels like an objective account, and it's an inspirational read.

My purpose for reading this was;

1) Out of curiosity, Ive been inspired by this man with a strange name for many months
2) I want to study principles he used to make a positive impact in the world to help me do the same

I was not disappointed. I found the book enjoyable/entertaining read and I highlighted many sentences of gems that I can apply into my own life.

Particularly what stood out for me from biography, was;
# Having a big clear inspiring vision
# Relentless work ethic
# Enormous decisions were made quickly, 90 degree shift in direction sometimes. Mantra of 'Fail fast & re-attempt with another method'
# A highly empowered & hungry small team -> can outcompete big giants

Book inspired me, helped me make some decisions in my own life. Worth a read.

p.s. If review helped, please let me know and there are similar books I can write up for you all
