Practice, practice, practice! The animals of the jungle. From those blue birdies to the lion and tiger, began to gather ‘round to watch the race. Nine elephants, each “decorated with a different color,” were ready to race. Elmer and Wilbur stood behind the lineup of very colorful elephants, ready to cheer them on. Elmer reminded them to “Remember it’s not just who is fastest or slowest, but how you run the race.” And then they were off! The monkeys at Monkey Corner told them to go the wrong way, directions that caused Pink and Violet to lose their way. At Red Rock Valley the cheating began. With all this confusion, would any of the little elephants know just who was the fastest?
Once again, Elmer the Patchwork Elephant, has yet another charming tale young children will love. As with many of the Elmer books, there’s a lesson to be learned. Of course it’s easy to see that when some of the elephants begin to cheat and those monkeys don’t play fair, their behaviors are simply not acceptable. I’ve definitely turned into an Elmer fan and have been enjoying the series of books. If you haven’t yet introduced Elmer and the other critters of the jungle to your little one, you’re in for a real treat when you do!
