Oh my!
Having enjoyed the just wonderful "Ella wishes you a Swinging Christmas Album" for years on end now, I finally resolved to treat myself and purchase both the same, and this item this year. You see, I managed to purloin my dear old Dad's Ella cd's years ago, and have strangely always forgotten to return them?
Ok, confession. This review is not unbiased - in any way, shape or form indeed. I am a huge Ella Fitzgerald fan - period. I very fortunately grew up in a musical household - both of my parents were excellent amateur musicians at one time or another - so there was always some form of music playing somewhere in the house. My Mum had pretty set musical tastes, but dear, old Dad had a very eclectic musical palate and was never afeared to try new music genres.
So, aside from Messrs Mozart, Liszt, Ravel, Mahler, Puccini, Delius, Shostakovich, etc... yours truly and the other truly monstrous siblings of the house were also thoroughly educated and constantly dipped in the magic waters of the very best of popular music, and jazz in particular. All the great singers, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Vic Damone, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Judy Garland, and Barbra Streisand to mention just my personal favourites.
As stated, Dad enjoyed tons of very different music, but he did dig his heels in a bit when it came to singers. For my Dad, for example, no female opera singer came anywhere near Maria Callas; and in his considered opinion, she was just the best. As for popular music and jazz female performers, I think Dad's favourite was Sarah Vaughn - but only by a whisker.
Sorry - supposed to be reviewing this album am I not! Ok, very traditional, very Christmassy, and the most beautiful of singing diction and tone imaginable. It really is a no-brainer if you will pardon the phrase.
Highly recommended.

I have many Christmas albums. Ella Fitzgerald singing carols is as seasonal and appropriate as befits the festivity. The purity, pitch perfect vocals that have been spoken and written about so many times are demonstrated on this recording. From 'O Holy Night', through to 'God Rest You Merry Gentlemen', Ella conveys the traditional songs fronting Ralph Carmichael's choir and orchestra released in 1967. The bonus is her gospel and hymn numbers, again with Ralph Carmichael, in 1966, where Ella showcases her versatility. From the traditional 'Abide with Me' to 'Throw Out The Lifeline', 'I Need Thee Every Hour' and 'What a Friend We Have in Jesus'. The arrangements by Grace Price and Robert Black on all numbers are superb.

Ella Fitzgerald is best known for her jazz recordings and songbooks. There is so much more to her output. These numbers are Ella delivering emotional songs in a way no one else can match, in a simplistic, pure beautiful way. Sure, she can swing Christmas songs and they are available and fabulous. This is her other side, equally brilliant and stirring from the supreme vocalist. A recommended purchase.

I admit this isn't an album I play as often as a number of Christmas albums. That's partly due to the nature of it: there is no secular material here, just a dozen carols and Christmas hymns. Ella leaves her jazz roots behind and enters Mahalia Jackson territory, acting as lead voice of the choir. It's not an album for playing in the background, Ella and the choir demand to be listened to. Oh Holy Night opens the album, and Ella is totally mesmerising from the opening notes of it until the final chords of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen

At the time of release, Ella must have seemed lost to audiences. After leaving Verve, she made a country album, a gospel album (also included here) and then this Christmas album. She might have left her roots behind but here she is such totally beautiful voice that the album's obscurity is even more of a shame. Anyone who has stumbled across her performance from the Tom Jones Show in which she sings with this type of material (it's on youtube) will know what to expect from the album.

As a bonus, we also get the gospel album Ella recorded with the same personnel in 1966. As with the Christmas album, this finds her in stunning form, injecting each track with just enough of a lilting soulfulness. There are some upbeat numbers in this album, such as the title track, Brighten the Corner. But the highlight is a moving rendition of Just a Closer Walk With Thee. Perhaps there is a slight problem here in the choice of some of the material - I'd have preferred gospel songs rather than the predominance of hymns. Even so, this is beautiful music, even for an atheist like me.

I have had the original 12" vinyl for many years, but now do not have the equipment to play it. This DVD was advertised at a very reasonable price, and I took the offer. There is a difference in how it sounds, but it is still good.
