- Crisp visuals
- Great audio, no buzzing or anything
- Easy to set up, uses only 3 cables and it small so hardly any 'mess'
- Decent price
- Software easy to use. Literally a 'plug and play' kind of device
- Videos can be edited in any editing software you choose, you are not forced to use the Elgato software (just right click the video and 'reveal in finder' on a Mac to drag it elsewhere and edit it how you wish)
- 720p is simply perfect for YouTube. No frame drops, no lag found at all, great for gaming channels
- Small file sizes - 15 minutes of 720p recording is approx 700MB, and when rendered in my other software Screenflow, this is reduced to approx 350MB without loss of quality.
- I have not noticed any resource sucking with this or loss of computer use whilst rendering or saving a file. Whilst rendering I have been able to use my computer as normal, and I have a fairly average spec (2.66Ghz Processor, 8GB RAM, 350GB HDD, NVIDIA GeForce 9400 256 MB)
The Cons:
- Cannot add in external audio track, and I found the in-software commentary recorder was massively out of sync with the game (but not a problem since you can edit in better software should you possess it)
- 1080p records the video out of sync with the game audio after a time, though I have a mediocre spec computer so maybe a higher spec won't have this problem
- The device gets a little warm after extended use, so be careful what you're placing it on. Best to have a placemat or something underneath it.
- Sometimes it takes two or three presses of the record button to get it to work. It seems to attempt to reconnect every time you press the button (although if you're in-game and moving the screen around, it seems to detect it first time), I don't think this is an issue with the device though, I think it may just not detect it if there's no movement on screen
All in all highly recommended. It even comes with all the cables so there's no need to go out any buy anything (unlike a PVR, which not only costs double usually, but you have to buy all the cables/splitters/etc to make it work).
In truth, I always wanted a BlackMagic Intensity Pro, but the Game Capture HD was less expensive and in the current situation, I preferred having my device external rather than having it in PCIe.
First, the quality is nearly as good as PCIe devices, making this one of the best USB 2.0 capture device I've tried. The software it comes with has minimal options to adjust brightness, contrast, etc., and lets you create profiles based on your settings. It has two modes: Capture and Edit. In capture mode, you obviously record what's on screen. Being a USB device, there is a small delay between what's really happening and what you see in the software, but luckily the Elgato has an HDMI port that can be used for "live" playback. For this reason I strongly recommend having a second monitor (I actually consider it as a requirement).
In edit mode, you can modify the length of your videos, take a screenshot of the current position within a recorded video, and you can convert them to MP4 or upload them to different video hosting websites.
Note that the capture mode does NOT have a screenshot button, but a shortcut does exist: CTRL+SHIFT+ALT+C. It's a lot of keys to press for a screenshot and it bothers me, as they could of simply added a screenshot button to the interface within this mode. Game Capture HD is still fairly new among the competitors, so I expect this to be added in a future update.
The software has a nice feature which I hadn't seen before: It keeps in memory a certain amount of time of your video. If I remember it's called Flash playback. For example, if you are playing a video game and saw something nice but weren't recording, you can use this option to rewind your gameplay within the software to record it.
Pros:
- Easy to install.
- Good quality.
- Comes with all the necessary cables.
- Game Capture HD software is simple.
- Software has both a "capture" and "edit" mode, allowing you to do simple editing.
- Allows you to stream to YouTube and Twitch.
- Allows you to convert recordings to MP4 for easy use in video editors.
- Allows you to directly upload to YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and to email within the software itself.
- Extremely good customer support (I had to contact them for a minor thing).
Cons:
- PCIe will still deliver better quality, but that is to be expected.
- No screenshot button in "capture" mode for quick capture.
- Could have more options and settings.
