Accomplished cellist Anne Gastinel is ably supported by Justin Brown and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in this distinctive coupling of the Elgar and Barber Cello Concertos. Best known, of course, is Elgar's autumnal masterpiece, here given a fine performance full of warmth and vibrancy from both soloist and orchestra. The spiky textures of the Barber Concerto contrast well: both are essentially Romantic works, but where Elgar is consolatory and elegiac, the neo-Romantic Barber is edgy and uncertain, shifting moods between a serene central Andante Sostenuto and more agitated outer movements. Gastinel is fully equal to the technical and expressive demands of each work, and the sympathetic recording at Symphony Hall in Birmingham captures her singing, legato tone particularly well. There's no direct comparison available, so anyone attracted by Gastinel's playing, by this complementary yet contrasting pairing or by both need not hesitate. --Mark Walker

I confess that Elgar's Concerto is not one of my favorite pieces (possibly due to overexposure at an impressionable age). It just doesn't hang together right, despite all the lovely things it contains.
I do like Anne Gastinel's playing, however. There's something about it (the elegant tone; the lack of "pushiness") that suits chamber music in particular. Her discs with Aimard (especially the Kodaly, Liszt, Janacek) and Guy (Brahms, Beethoven) are very beautiful indeed.
On this new disc, both the Elgar and the Barber benefit from her concertante, "chamber" style. Maybe ears attuned to the somewhat ardent approach of, say, du Pre in the Elgar will find something a little reticent here? But with a fine recording and stylish playing, this is a splendid coupling that provides new insights into a well known piece (and an introduction to a not very well known piece).
Cool packaging as always from Naïve. A great record company!

2.0 out of 5 stars Stick with a du Pre recording of the Elgar 10 April 2014

Gastinel's entry is weak, to this ear, bottomless and goes nowhere. I kept wait for her to make statement and alas she never did. Nice cover art, but poor artisty to be had inside. Throughout, I almost Gastinel was intimidated by the work which as we all knows makes for a poor performance.
