Product Description

Elfie Hopkins, a 22 year-old animal-loving slacker, stoner, and wannabe detective, lives in a sleepy hunting village. Haunted by the death of her mother, Elfie seeks solace and inspiration from the old school detectives in The Maltese Falcon and Chinatown. She entertains herself, along with her geeky best friend, Dylan, by investigating the villagers and upsetting everyone with their imaginative allegations. Things get serious however with the arrival of a family of trendy city dwellers, the Gammons, who weave seductive tales of adventure and entice the villagers with offers of exotic hunting holidays around the world. Despite not being immune to the Gammons charms, Elfie soon smells a rat, and snaps into full detective mode. Her mundane existence is about to be blown apart. Blood quickly starts to spill in the village, and it s no longer just the blood of animals. Elfie discovers the villagers are not making those flights and when she finally uncovers the truth, it s darker than she could ever have imagined...

Based on the artwork I expected this to be a medieval monster hunter film. Actually it's a sort of Brit Disturbia. Elfie and her bud Parker are stoners who want to be detectives. When a new family moves next door to Elfie she thinks they have their first chance at a real case. Since this new family looks as if they wandered straight off the set of a Tim Burton movie and disappearances spike wherever they move, it's very likely that she is right. The early scenes of Elfie and Parker getting stoned and being buddies and conducting their investigation work pretty well. When you find out what the neighbors actually are the movie runs into trouble because it never finds the proper tone for the suddenly violent scenes. Is Elfie Hopkins a horror movie? A thriller? A comedy? After watching it I couldn't really tell you. This is worth a look but I would make it a rental.

This quirky little British film is as much about the title character coming of age and overcoming the complexes brought on by a fraught family history as it is about horror represented by the seductive evil of the creepy Gammon family who move in to the small village where she lives. Or rather the two strands run parallel. It delivers the horror goods but not at the expense of believable characterisation. This makes a refreshing change from the mindless hard-bodied-hotties-in-danger horror features which characterise much of the American product. It is also quite funny in its satire on complacent middle England values on the one hand and the phony new-age sophistication represented by the predatory Gammon family on the other. Overall a film which I would heartily recommend to a discriminating viewer of horror films who would like to see something a bit more subtle and emotionally intelligent than a psycho with a chainsaw/axe/meat-cleaver menacing vacuous American college girl cuties. This enjoyable film would appeal as much to women as to men I surmise...

This 2012 dark humoured suspense thriller tells the story of 18 year-old loner Elfie Hopkins (Jaime Winstone), living in a affluent hunting village enclave, and is haunted by the death of her mother when she was 12. She passes her time taking drugs with her only friend, computer geek Dylan (Aneurin Barnard), who obviously has a crush on her, and playing detective by investigating the villagers and upsetting everyone with their imaginative allegations. The pairs mundane existence is soon shaken with the arrival of the all too popular Gammons. But is there something to Elfie’ inquires or are we just being sucked into her madness?
The single disc opens to three film trailers then goes to main screen offering play, scene selection, extras [2 deleted scenes, making of, trailer and Little Munchkin—a brilliant 10 minute short drama and the catalyst for the main film] and audio set up [5.1 or 2.0 only].
There are plenty of false trails as the story slowly winds its way, the suspense growing as the film progresses to its gruesome conclusion. Some strong language and bloody violence and gore toward the end make this a surprise 15 rating. Unfortunately the publicity for this film acts as the plot spoiler [lose a *] and gives away the main plot twist, so the less you know, the better it will be. For that reason alone it gets a solid **** rating, otherwise ***** if you know nothing about it.

Elfie (Jaime Winstone)lives in the quiet town of Thorntree Valley. She plays detective along with her stoner friend Dylan Parker (Aneurin Barnard). When the Gammon family moves in next door, Elfie immediately becomes suspicious of them. What they are up to, she doesn't know, but along with the help of Dylan, she is going to find out. The family operates a specialty vacation agency, so the people they book, stay gone for a long time.

The audience is left in the dark as to what is going on, if anything, as things have an explanation outside of the Gammons.

This is a cult film which is a light dark comedy, pardon my oxymoron. Elfie operates in an amateur fashion using 1980's technology. She clearly plays her hand too soon. Just a fun cult popcorn film.

Parental Guide: F-bomb. No sex or nudity.

Ignore the bad reviews, this a terrific low budget Brit horror.I also found it quite original while acknowledging its influences Elfie and Parker are likeable protagonists and we have a genuinely weird bunch of bad guys.In fact I really can't understand the bad reviews, but I have noticed that some of said reviews come from the Colonies where the film's title had to include the legend 'Cannibal Hunter' no doubt to attract the Charmed Buffy the Twilight Slayer brigade.Duh! I actually give it four and a half stars, the portion missing due to some iffy accents especially I hate to say that of Winston Snr! Recommended for fans of Brit/folk horror who fancy something a bit different.Did I also say it's very funny?.

This Winstone-family production has much going for it; Ray did a lovely turn as a butcher straight out of Texas Chainsaw whilst Jaime, high on weed, wants to be a detective to counter the boredom encountered in the village she inhabits.Alongside her computer-geek friend Dylan, she explores whatever mysteries, real or imagined, may be occurring.

These activities of course are frowned on by their respective uptight parents; Dylan's parents want him to go to university whilst he prefers to partner the charismatic Elfie as it's much more fun. However, the fun begins to have a dark side when they investigate the activities of the Gammons - Dad, Mum and psychotic twins Charlie and Amy. The Gammons weave stories of exotic vacations to the well-heeled locals ; it is Dylan who finds out that The Gammons are linked to a series of disappearances in the places they have lived. There is a real case for the pair to investigate. What they have to fight are their parents' conventional views about the charming Gammons who turn out to be not charming at all.

The film proceeds logically to its grisly climax but manages to avoid over-the-top Grand Guignol. It is best viewed as black comedy and, perhaps, a satire on horror films but should be taken for what it is - an entertaining ninety minutes of well put together acting and characterisation . What must also be mentioned was the accompanying small film, 'Little Munchkin' which was well titled.
