“Silence of the Lambs, move over. Eleven is an absolutely stunning performance.” – Goodreads reviewer, ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
In this international bestseller, rookie FBI Agent Brandon Fisher takes on his first case with the Behavioral Analysis Unit, but will he survive long enough to catch the killer? Eleven is a fast-paced, spine-tingling thriller that will have you gasping for breath at every twist…
Eleven Rooms. Ten Bodies. One Empty Grave.
When Brandon Fisher joined the FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit, he knew he’d come up against psychopaths, sociopaths, pathological liars, and more. But when his first case takes him and the team to Salt Lick, Kentucky, to hunt down a ritualistic serial killer, he learns what nightmares are truly made of.
Beneath a residential property, local law enforcement discovered an underground bunker with circular graves that house the remains of ten victims. But that’s not all: there’s an empty eleventh grave, just waiting for a corpse. The killing clearly hasn’t come to an end yet, and with the property owner already behind bars, Brandon is certain there’s an apprentice who roams free.
As the FBI follows the evidence across the United States, Brandon starts to struggle with the deranged nature of his job description. And if the case itself isn’t going to be enough to push Brandon over the edge, he’s working in the shadow of Supervisory Special Agent Jack Harper, who expects nothing short of perfection from his team. To make matters even worse, it seems Brandon has become the target of a psychotic serial killer who wants to make him—or his wife—victim number eleven.

I found the stye and subject matter not dissimilar to Kathy Riach's material. I do not suggest that to be disparaging on the writing prowess of Carolyn Arnold, far from it. I used to meet and deal with a number of writers who used to tell me there are only six / seven story lines as such, true or not doesn't matter, - the process is to fill out the stories to bring the reader along that journey with you the writer. Carolyn does that. I recommend her work to others.
Eleven is set in Salt Lick, the kind of small nowheresville town, that could even be your hometown.
The main protagonists are'newbie' Special (FBI) Agents Brandon Fisher and his ex-girlfriend Paige, who's still in lust with him, even though Brandon is persistently faithful to his wife
The evil antagonist is the suspected serial-killer, Lance Bingham, who has the Twitter tag @theRedeemer. He's got the facade of being a former handyman - friendly and helpful to most of his neighbours and being seen as a good guy - down pat.
Brandon and Paige are backed by the FBI team of Supervisory Special Agent Jack Harper (Brandon's supposed mentor), who taunts him to succeed by calling him Kid or Slingshot; his sidekick Zachery, tries to brown-nose his way into Harper's good books by using copycat behaviour and Nadia, a whizz-kid researcher at HQ.
The team are drawn physically and emotionally into a whirlpool of action and psychological manipulation, by Bingham and his acolytes - all obsessed with the coinherence symbol, aka the eponymous number eleven.
The denouement takes place in Saratoga, with near-deadly results for Brandon and Paige. Can the rest of the team track them down, before it's too late?
Carolyn Arnold's first Brandon Fisher FBI novel climaxes with a nail-biting finish, that will leave you breathless and excited right to the imaginative end.
Grab your copy of Eleven (and all Carolyn Arnold's other great books), as soon as you can - and don't forget to look over your shoulder for the Redeemer, if you go out after dark!
The story itself was a fairly average procedural. Serial killer about, more victims to come, can we stop him in time. The slight twist here is they know who the main suspect is, but need to find who his "followers"/ mentees are. There are, in my opinion, some really weak parts to the story. Firstly, it seems in this world it's okay for the FBI to jump to wild conclusions, with little proof and no confirmation, and then follow these assumptions like they were gospel (coinherence??), and of course everything plays out just as they expected. Then in other places we are expected to buy some pretty big gaps in knowledge. I'd be surprised if Quantico doesn't teach at least the basics of mitochondrial DNA for example, since it was discovered in the 1960s and is used widely!
So all in, I found myself annoyed with what was happening, and mainly with the characters, rather than enjoying. I wouldn't bother with the rest of the series.
A lot of suspense, an unexpected ending and a bit scary too. A bit slow too at times and some predictable lines (most of the FBI stories have agents where wives left them while they are in the middle of an investigation) but nevertheless entertaining and will keep you reading until the end. I shall definitely check out more titles from Ms Arnold.
