Firstly I am a Spawn fan. The animated series is excellent, the comics are superb, the film was good and the Dreamcast game Spawn in the Demon's Hand was one of the best games I have ever played. When I played it I thought to myself how it would be even better if they turned into story mode - I've been proved wrong by this fine example of a terrible game. The bad points first: Game difficulty is far too difficult even in easy mode. Spawns life bar does not provide enough health to play the game properly. The vast amount of enemies that can swamp you at points in the game is very frustrating as even with the best weapons they are still difficult to defeat. The controls are terrible, it's a nightmare trying to get him to move in different directions, especially when jumping from platform to far away platform (and believe me there is far too much of that in this game). One of the most annoying missions is one I had high hopes for, when Spawn has to take the Hellhole to Hell. Repeatedly Spawn kept falling into the lava and hen you nearly complete the level and die it takes you right back to the beginning. Once you have finally reached Malebolgia even he is disappointing. To me he looks nothing like he did in the Spawn in the Demon's Hand game or in the comics. The worst level though is the Angel Station - what a nightmare, having to repeatedly run from room to room destroying power conduits and fighting the incredibly tough angel characters. This carries on for 2 large parts of the space station. After about an hour and a half of doing this Spawn was killed and I had to do it all over again. A complete waste of time that is frustrating at the best of times. Instructions about what to do to pass each level are not as clear as they could be. I would class myself as quite an experienced gamer and this game has to be one of the most frustrating. So much potential and lost opportunities are found in this game. The positive points: It has obviously been a labour of love where they try and include as many comic characters as possible. The scenery graphics are superb. The voice acting is good retaining the voices from the animated series. The story ties in with the comics pre Spawn 100. The unlockable comic cover art and concept art and encyclopaedia are fantastic. All these factors redeem it to 3 stars rather than 2, which was going to be my original rating. Only the most serious of Spawn fans who cannot live without it should apply for this game, otherwise if you are a Spawn fan and have Span in the Demon's hand, then just stick with that game as it is alot better than this game.
I bought this game a couple of weeks ago and I suppose I made the rightchoice. It is really only to be aimed at people that are familiar with anyaspect of the Spawn franchise phenomenon. Throughout the game it does getvery repetitive and tiresome and at some points very difficult but it doesmake up for it by being reasonably enjoyable. The graphics are mediocreand could have been slightly better. The game also at times is veryreminiscent of Devil May Cry although it doesn't quite live up to itsimage. However the game is enjoyable and is a refreshing start to actually decentSpawn video games. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested inSpawn or quite in to shoot 'em up style action games that are a lot likeDevil May Cry. Apart from that though it probably won't be very populardue to Spawn being reasonably obscure nowadays in the UK.
