Bejeweled 3 on the Nintendo DS is the first installment of Bejeweled on the DS (with the exception of Bejeweled Twist). With a similar game Zoo Keeper being one of the first DS games available at the console's launch, it would take Bejeweled 3 some effort to outdo the former game, and it delivers on all levels.
Bejeweled 3 has a multitude of different modes for the player to take part in. In each of the modes you match three gemstones of the same colour in a line to make that line disappear and earn points. If you get four gems in a line, you get a glowing gem which destroys a 3x3 area around it when matched. If you get five gems in a line, you get a hypercube which when swapped with an adjacent gem, will make all the gems of that colour disappear and earn you a lot of points.
Classic mode gives the player an infinite amount of time to play, but ends when no more moves are possible, in other modes the game makes it impossible for you to run out of moves by always giving you at least one matching gem line. Zen mode is a meditative version of the above, with relaxing sounds and an endless session (the player decides when they want to stop).
Lightning mode is a time-trial version of the basic game, where you can earn more seconds by matching gems which have a number inside them. These numbers disappear eventually if not matched fast enough. When the time runs out, the player loses control of the game and any glowing gems will explode, earning extra points. Quest mode gives the player objectives to complete, such as "get 20 line combos in 120 moves" or "get 20 blue lines and 20 red lines but keep them balanced"
Other modes include Butterflies, Diamond Mine, Ice Storm and Poker. Butterflies is interesting since some of the gems move upwards on their own, if the butterfly gem reaches the top of the screen it is eaten by a spider and you lose. In Poker, you have to be more selective about matching. Each gem line you create gives you a different poker hand, so for example if you match three orange lines, you will get a `three of a kind' bonus.
Overall this is a very exciting game with great sounds and music. The different modes offer variety and your rank increases over time. There are also little achievements to unlock for each challenge which will definitely keep you occupied for a long time. A must have for anyone who enjoys match 3 games.
The only thing that scared me - but now it is ok - it was, that at ZEN mode, at level 71 the top screen showed the picture only with "pixels". I was scared that the game has crushed, but I keeped play and after that, at level 71 everything was ok again.
I highly recommend this game. It is the best game ever !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
