This is a beautiful record - Dhafer Yousef plays the oud (a type of arabic lute)and sings like an angel. He mixes middle eastern melodies with cool jazz grooves in a unique way. The trunpet playing of Max Stockhausen on this album is great too.
Many albums of "world music" mixed with jazz fail - but this one succeeds admirably. Buy it - you won't be dissapointed.

If you like trying out new musical flavours you might just treat yourself to something like this. The combination of Marcus Stockhausen (son of...) on trumpet and Youssef on oud and vocals creates an aromatic and atmospheric brew, which the rest of the band compliments very well. Youssef is an excellent musician and vocalist with a stunning range and plenty of dynamic oomph, and if (particularly with his singing) he is inclined to showboat occasonally, who's complaining? Stockhausen has a gorgeous tone and knows when to hold back and when to welly.

There are dreamy, smoky numbers on here and some more upbeat stuff, some more recognisably jazz-influenced than others, but all shot through with plenty of middle eastern flavour. This was one of my first forays into more 'world'-type music, and I found it a great album to get started on in that sense; it's accessible enough to grow on you very quickly, whilst still providing plenty for those with more developed palates to get their teeth into.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Music ! Incredible Voice ! 9 July 2003
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com

What a great album ! If you like contemporary jazz with a fabulous mix of world music and traditional instruments, you will enjoy a lot. The second track worths alone the price of the cd. Dhafer Youssef has an incredible voice register that surely spans 4 octaves. The band is composed of excellent musicians and they have created here an exceptional piece of music. Check the upcoming new album called Digital Prophecy where Dhafef Youssef plays with the Nils Petter Molvaer band.

What a fabulous CD. I first played this CD on random with 5 others and each time a track of this one came on I had to stop and savour the beautiful sounds of the instruments. There are elements of jazz, rock and peaceful meditations, each one transporting to another dimension or world. Love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Arabic Music at its best 21 Mar. 2011

Great oriental jazz album. Dafer's voice is truly unbelievable (track 2 is one of his best). The mixture of Arabic scales, jazz rhythmics and instruments is putting traditional Arabic music in new flavorful format any Jazz listener can enjoy, yet still unique enough that you won't listen to something like this but from Dafer and his friends.
