Just to say I was thoroughly gripped by this book and as soon as I finished it bought the sequel - Will. I recommend it highly.

Gripping story from start to finish. Characters are excellently portrayed and scenes are well drawn so that although a fantasy, it all seems so real.

In the same vein as LOTR, with elves, dwarves, swords and horses; this is a brilliant fantasy , the characters are well drawn and the plot convoluted enough to keep you interested.
The story takes place in Mydren, a huge continent on an Earth-like planet in an alternate universe. The main male character Conlon, wishes to end the tyranny in Mydren by creating 4 elemental avatars using magic. He needs a human soul to animate his avatars and he gets these via a portal to our Earth. He chooses someone on the point of death and asks if they would like another chance at life, if they agree he transports their soul through the portal to create an avatar. Eleanor is one of these souls and she turns out to be quite a handful, but her challenging approach to things leads to the success that has alluded him for the last ten years. In this book the first part of the quest is completed but there is so much more left to tell, in fact the final chapter is called " The Beginning". I'm looking forward to book two.

If you enjoy Lord of the Rings type fantasy books, you are likely to like this one. I struggled to put it down and loved all the characters and the storyline. There are a couple of things that are a little odd and whilst I appreciate that this is a fantasy world it conjures up a "medieval" image with all those horses and swords so a notice board in the back room of a jeweller's shop is a little out of place and feels almost anachronistic. However that doesn't stop the flow for long and you're soon drawn back into the story. I certainly will be waiting for "Will".

I read the blurb and the positive reviews before purchasing this book and it appeared to be exactly the sort of novel I enjoy. However, none of the reviews made it apparent that the 'strong female character' is subjected to systematic physical abuse by the central male character. Is that OK because she loves him? Yes, I know he has 'issues' - his father rejected and abused him, he never learned how to demonstrate affection etc etc. Equally disturbing was the attitude of the other members of the group - whilst not condoning the violence they clearly consider she 'asks for it' by not letting a subject drop. Indeed, when he breaks a promise never to hit her again she is blamed for making him break a promise!!! Where is Jeremy Kyle when you need him???
I am sure there are some who find this acceptable, however I felt compelled to write this so that unwary readers. (like myself!) would be forewarned.

I read books to enjoy and this one I found gripped me, so I consider it to be well written. Eleanor is a strong character and teach the other three to control and understand their powers (mother earth?).
I was disappointed when I came to the end of the book, I want to know Gregory is ok. I want to know how Conlan and Arran will react to being half brothers. I would like Freddie to have someone who will love him back. Of course I want to found how they win the war.
It's very refreshing to read a book without blow by blow sex, this proves a book can be excellent without every detail.

Can't wait for book 2, hope it's not a long wait.

it was such a fantastic book i did not put it down! (much to my families displeasure when i looked like a zombie the next day). eleanor is a strong character who captivated me and was definitely a person i could respect. SF Burgess is now officially in my top "favourite authors" collection.
