I received mine a few weeks ago here in the UK. It came with a long black UK plugged cord (so if anyone was wondering). That weekend I got to try it out after a quick mow of the lawn and a quick bit of assembly - nothing difficult but you will need a screwdriver for the screws that hold the handle to the main body. My lawn isn't massive, just about 40-50m sq but it was about 80% moss.
I did multiple passes - scarify, rake, then 30degrees, scarify and rake again. I took the advice here of not using the bag on the first run with the scarifier. As expected I had a decent 3ft pile of moss from the initial pass and switching between the scarifier and rake was easy - they provide the allen key.
In use the machine is powerful enough to pull itself along, however be careful to check that both wheels are set to the same depth - my lawn got a bit harder haircut than it was expecting! :) You'll need to plan some overrun at the edges of the lawn as the blades are located in the middle of the machine.
The bag is a bit of a joke - but mainly because the rate at which it removes moss. I used the bag on the second raking to pick up the remaining debris and although it works it's a little flimsy. To be honest it's easy to hand rake the initial passes then use it for the latter.
After all done, I had filled a Ford Focus with the seats down with bags full of moss to take to the local recycling centre and it's now hung in the garage for autumn - I think it will last a while for most people's lawns here in the UK. The lawn was then heavily over seeded and is slowly greening up nicely.
I've been there, and didn't really want to be there again.
Due to this exact reason I had since philosophically ignored any moss, accepting its inevitability as a fact of life. Because it has been so goldarned wet in the UK over the last couple of years, the moss levels have sadly reached new heights! A combination of the wettest 12 months in living memory and record-breaking high water tables again had me considering the unthinkable... "More moss than lawn now", thought I... "now where's the blinking rake"?
I then had a complete eureka moment, thinking to myself that maybe there was a tool out there that could help me in the hideous task. The following bit of Googling indeed confirmed that there was a thingummy called a scarifier, but which one should I choose? I did decide not to hire one, as I also read that the big industrial hire machines are apparently very effective, but very difficult to push back & forth. I was therefore to be the proud owner of a smaller such beast, although I didn't want to shell out the best part of 100 quid on something that would turn out to be a lemon so set about checking out the reviews for various machines.
The best 3 by far (it seemed) were by Bosch, Black & Decker and a this model by a producer I had never heard of before....Read more ›
After just 20 minutes on the highest setting with the scarifier attachment fitted all drive was lost to the roller and the motor simply raced at high revs. I suspect the cause was a broken drive belt but I was very relieved by this short time to relinquish ownership and return it for a refund.
All credit to Amazon for the excellent customer service. After printing off a returns label it was collected the next day and my card was credited with a full refund within 36 hours.
I would certainly not recommend this item.
This Einhell is both lawn rake and scarifier in one as it comes with two separate blades which can be fitted depending on what you want to do. Changing them is a bit awkward especially with the sharp edges so it's best done when wearing gardening gloves to avoid cuts and takes around five minutes. The machine itself is quite manoeuvrable on grass thanks to its small rear wheels (like a shopping trolley) although it struggles on hard surfaces like pathways so I have been carrying it back and to between my lawns. Some assembly is required from the box but it was reasonably easy to put together and took around 30 minutes. There's also a powerful 1200w motor which should be able to cope with even the most demanding lawns.
There are three settings for height which determines how much contact the blades have with the ground. The best option depends on how hard or moist the soil is, how much thatch your lawn has and how drastic you want to be with it.Read more ›
