Commandos features more characters than the first two, a thief, a french resistance women and more. The thief can stalk guards and pickpocket the enemy. Unlike the first Commandos all the characters can pick up rifles and the SMGs carried by the german troops. You have a lot more options in Commandos 2 such as climb walls and look through windows. There is even a rat which is used to distract enemy troops. Now the enemy are more like and enemy, they play cards, drink, sleep and drive there cars around. The missions are vastly inproved with more life like interactions etc. Multiplayer is also very good with a LAN connection.
Eidos really analysed the first Commandos faults and improved on them no end.
I enjoyed every minute of this and felt a real sense of regret when I finally finished it.
Bring on commandos 3!
The developers have introduced new characters into the game: a thief, a seductress and bizarely a dog. The graphics have been uprated, which leads to the stunning settings for the missions. One of the more irritating things about the original game was the inability to search bodies for weapons, clothes etc. This has now been rectified and your commandos can take items from boides and search through your environment for extras hidden in cupboards, drawers and wardrobes.
The missions on the game show real thought has been put into them, and they range from missions where you take on the Germans in U-boat bases, Normandy invasions and the infamous Castle Colditz among others, to missions where you are attacking the Japanese war machine in naval bases, Burma and across Asia.
The characters can perform things which you really expect a group of commando's to be able to do, something lacking in the first game. Things like throwing grenades through windows, hiding under beds, climbing walls, knocking on walls to attract attention, laying mines and setting up trip wires all become common place in this game.
This game has it's faults. Personally I think it is too short, because even with the bonus missions available, I found it frustrating when it ended because it really is that good. On the first play through on normal difficulty, I found the whole game rather simple because the enemy AI was not the greatest. However, when I played through on "very hard" mode, the whole game took on a different perspective, requiring precision coupled with careful planning.
Overall this game is one of the best strategy games out there because it now has a much more intense feel to it. The game is under a tenner now, so there really is no excuse for not owning it!
(By the way commandos 3 was a big disapointment after this game)
The only draw back is that you can save whenever you want...so it felt a bit like cheating to be saving every few minutes..but I guess that's par for the course. Also, while I think about it...once you've completed all the levels, that's it...but that didn't spoil the enjoyment for me one bit!
The bonus levels were good and I liked the scenarios and settings - a very good piece of work!
Overall a very engaging game.
