Ancient Wars: Sparta is based on the history of the ancient ages and their main nations. Spartans, Persians and Egyptians are fighting for influence around Asia Minor, Europe and North Africa. Following historical events, the action takes place with different campaigns for all three races. Sparta represents 3D strategy in real time with the newly developed Ancient Wars Engine (AWE), where the player will have to use each nation's powers to be superior over other competitors and build up a dominant culture and civilisation.

The main emphasis is on large-scaled battles and complex tactical manoeuvres. Players can strategically equip soldiers with weapons of choice. Warriors can be equipped with weapons and shields, can be put on horses or on chariots and be given special abilities. The player can collect abandoned weapons after battles or import powerful weapons from other cultures to build special units. Fire, Wind etc. will effect the whole environment. Cities can be upgraded and turned to fortresses, workers gather resources to ensure a safe economy. Ancient Wars: Sparta offers RTS fans all their favourite gameplay with a vast variety of new features and innovative options.

I've got 2 pcs, one with vista, one with xp. I have no problems running all the latest games on vista (i have around 25 installed including supcom etc..), the only game i cannot run is C&C Generals, but thats old.

This one however, strangely for a new release has problems on the main menu, a nasty complete pc lockup requiring a hard reset. I bought it and havent played it yet!. Doesnt seem to be any write ups on the bugs, any patches hinted at being released or reviews by anyone yet.

Until a patch comes out i rate this at 1, because compatibility is the worst ive ever seen.

A bug ridden, dissapointing mess.

I have purchased almost a hundred games from Amazon over the years and in that time I have never, ever posted a review despite getting good games and bad games alike.

Until this game

After reading reviews of this game I ordered it and was looking forward to a decent RTS. Alas the game,once installed proved to be one of the most problematic efforts I have ever seen. The game freezes on windows vista every few minutes and can only be unlocked by 'alt+tab'ing from that window to the other and some campaigns never send you on to the next mission after completing one. In short and cutting to the chase, this game is a mess it should not have been released with such huge Vista compatibility issues and as far as I'm concerned represents a colossal waste of money and hard drive space. This game has now been uninstalled from my machine and is sitting in the 'junk pile'. I would advise extreme caution if you are considering buying this.

It is also notable that the website doesnt seem to have a forum where complaints can be made or observations from the playbase and customers can be heard.

Having read the other reviews of this game I am quite surprised. There seem to be two main complaints:

1. bugs & crashes (vista compatibility)

2. no tutorials

The game often encounters an error when you quit, but other than that it has run beautifully on my pc. I have all the sliders turned right up (the environments and effects are exceptionally good) and I've experienced no bugs or crashes. I am running Windows Vista on a pretty top spec computer, and it may be that the game only works well on a high-spec pc.

As for the lack tutorials I also found this slightly irritating. I was more frustrated with the AI difficulty though. Although the campaign is fairly straightforward and the learning curve is not too steep, I tried to play a random skirmish against the computer on Easy setting. It was really difficult! I am more used to straightforward WAR RTSs like Dawn Of War, and it took me a long time to survive an 'easy' skirmish.

Do not be put off this game by the other reviews, especially if you have a really fast pc. The gameplay is great, the graphics and animations are way above average. The environments in particular are the best I have ever seen (including Mark of Chaos, Medieval TW2 and Supreme Commander). Finally I felt the game was superbly put together, with good storylines and great historical context. I think the game is superb and shows huge potential for a whole series of 'Ancient Wars' games.

Definitely give the game a go - it is brilliant. [..]

Eidos seems to trying to be to clever

For a start there is no tutoral of how to play the game, so you are left with having your barracks built but no idea of how to build more troops and you are going to need them as once again the computor seems to have unlimited supplies and can build troops very quickly.

When one level is won it is easy to load up the game you have just won,as it is very confusing,Also why do we have to have the hero keep repeating the same phrases over and over ,The music is bad enough but at least this can be reduced.In all Iam very Disapointed with the Game and think I have wasted £16 I paid for it
