This release makes full use of and EP release (rather unlike the slightly dissapointing Fight Test ep). The new songs on it are absolutly FANTASTIC! If you loved Yoshimi (like me), but more so loved the Soft Bulleton (also like me!) you'll be glad to hear that these songs bring back the great orchestral porduction and plain fun of Soft Bulleton and make it sound better than ever!
"Assasination of the Sun" is possibly one of the best lips song out there, its great fun, but also has the classic lips provocative lyrics. "They have begun to assasinate the sun" is sang with so much heart and emotion that, even though its a negetive line, its sounds wonderous! This song is so exciting and great i can't recomend it more!
This is not all we get though! "Fly on a Sunbeam" brings back the style of the brilliant instrumentals of the soft bulletons, and adds the trumpet style of Yoshimi and Christmas on Mars instrumentals. "A Change at Christmas" is not only a great lips song, but a great christmas track. Again a valuble messege is put forward during a brilliantly catchy affair. Waynes spoken word approach reminds me of the great chemical brothers duet "The Golden Path"
But the amazing "Sunship Ballons" is the biggest supprise. Fun, happy, uncomplicated and guitar based this song is not typical lips, but is all the better for it! It glorifys sex and is great to move to, and should be a welcome addition to their live set. Although i'm not a great fan of remixes, the ones provided are pretty fun, and so i fully recomend this release to any lips fan, and any music fan in general!

nobody has mentioned 'a change at christmas', one of the greatest flaming lips songs of all time, and the best xmas record ever!

i was particularly gutted as the year before my group 'they came from the stars, i saw them' made what was (then) the all-time greatest psychedelic xmas record. THEN the flaming lips brought out THIS and i remain floored. if it doesn't rip out your insides you're already a goner. beautiful beyond my capacity to express.

But enough editorialising, and on with the review:
The first three new tracks all carry the Flaming Lips' inimitable quality- beautiful vocals and music, and even if you don't listen to the lyrics, the lush sounds wash over you as always. For the initiated, I'd say think The Soft Bulletin, rather than Yoshimi.. but I'm happy to be proved wrong.
The three remixes are all individual and good in their own ways, Do You Realize?? sounds like it's being played by a very cheap Casio keyboard, although in this case it's a very good thing, and even though the two remixes of Ego... come back to back, the song doesn't get repetitive.
As for the Christmas song, it took more than one listen to get into it, but like a true classic it grows on you very quickly, and will no doubt be the best Christmas song out this year, even if it doesn't receive the critical and commercial acclaim it deserves.
In conclusion, I recommend this to everyone.

I really enjoy the "self admiration with blow-up mix" by Blow-Up - Paolo Cilione & Claudio Camaione. The names sound Euro but this isn't Euro-Disco. It's more like The Rapture guitars mixed with Kaftwerk sounds. These guys mixed rock with electronic grooves just like The Falming Lips do on so many of their own tracks. It's very complimentary to the original and not at all a turn-off like so many remixes. The remix of "Do You Realize" is much better than the one that was on the "Fight Test" ep. First of all it's not 9min. long and it's to the point, fun & fast.
