Top Customer Reviews

First of all, "Effective Software Engineering" can be a useful tool, for both experienced professionals and recent graduates. As many other books focused on the software development industry practices, we are presented a clear set of guidelines to improve the quality of the product we're working on.

However, what makes this book different is that its focus goes beyond the typical software development project point-of-view. Mr. Svart clearly believes that the product quality should be measured not only by what's delivered in the end of the development stage, but also on how it will evolve in the subsequent life-cycle stages. This is something a lot of developers I know should care about, being more product-minded and less project-minded.

You will find your time well spent reading this book. In the least it will make you rethink what defines a good product. Most likely it will help to deliver better products.

After nearly 12 years of writing code professionally it was refreshing to take a figurative step back and read a book that really gives valuable advices in order to face different types of problem solving and challenges. Throughout the book everything is explained in a good level of detail and enough background information is provided so that the reader should never feel out of their depth. The author is obviously very knowledgeable and experienced with the concepts and his writing style is very down-to-earth and enjoyable. The various presented rules and guidelines to create software products are clearly weighed up with logical backing. As the title suggests, "Effective Software Engineering" tries to get to the core of the special way that successful programmers effectively work and how, when prompted with critical questions they should face the challenges. The author has taught computer science for about as long as I've been programming and this shows in his writing. He has clearly seen a lot of different realities that provided him the hability to achieve excellence. "Effective Software Engineering: A guide to building successful software products" really is a clear, well-written and insightful book!!

The production and deployment, the operation and the maintenance of software products are the key technical areas approached in a brilliant and easy to understand way by JOHN SVART in this book.
His down to earth advices, namely - but not only - in chapters like
`Prepare for the unexpected',
`Problems are not solved by magic',
`Do not accept impossible challenges' and
`Do not outsmart yourself',
are of so much importance in this technical professional activity as in life.
I look forward to reading more of John Svart's!

Building software can be quite easy. Building a software product is far more complicated.
Building a good and successful software product, that can be crazy complicated.
This book can bring quite a practical and insightful way of organizing your work in order to achieve a great piece of software. Not just a software that works, but also appealing and user friendly.
Great book to read and to check from time to time, when you need it.
