Edwin Jagger Imitation Ivory Super Badger handmade English shaving brush. This fabulous Edwin Jagger shaving brush is created in Sheffield, England using selected polyester material for the brush handle. Using a shaving brush such as this will improve overall wet shaving results by softening and lifting the beard hair before the shave. Super badger is chosen by many for its' soft, yet luxurious, and highly effective lathering performance. Edwin Jagger super badger hair is an excellent quality for wet shavers who use shaving cream or a hard shaving soap and also for those with sensitive or fair facial skin and softer beard growth. Natural badger hair is chosen for its ability to absorb large amounts of hot water, transfer it to the face and soften the beard during the shave ensuring consistent lathering performance for the daily shave. Use with Edwin Jagger natural shaving soap for a rich, moisturising shaving lather. Edwin Jagger recommends that, after daily use, shaving brushes are thoroughly rinsed in warm water and hung to dry. This brush comes packaged in an Edwin Jagger logo presentation box and is accompanied by a matching plastic drip stand and 'Care of' and wet shaving instructions to ensure longevity. A fabulous gift.

The stand is a very simple one-piece plastic with an adhesive pad on the back and a countersunk indent which could be drilled through and secured with a screw. Overall, the stand doesn't look like it's made specifically for the brush which just rests on the stand by its handle. I'd like to see a slot in the handle which would fit the stand more securely.
In use the brush is very soft and produced a good slick lather with Proraso shaving cream lathered directly on the face. The brush would work equally well with a shaving soap stick similarly lathered directly on the face. However the brush is perhaps too large and too soft for lathering soap in a bowl or mug but that's my own personal preference.
Overall, the brush works so well with Proraso shaving cream and I wonder how I ever managed without it. A very well deserved 5 stars.
The drip stand is useful which can be stuck onto the wall and lets the water drip off the brush.
My last brush was a Men-U one which was pretty good but no where near as soft or well made. I would defiantly purchase one of these again but would probably drop back down to a medium.
The simple box packaging Edwin Jagger have chosen for all their products detailing their history on the back and not telling you what's inside but I really like it. The product also comes wrapped in tissue along with a small piece of paper which also gives you a history of the company along with tips and how to take care of your brush.
It`s a hair, rather than bristle brush so it holds a good deal more water than a conventional shaving brush; one has to learn the knack of shaking out just enough water to ensure a good lather without swamping the shaving bowl – easily judged after the first couple of shaves. The brush is wonderfully soft – like lathering with an expensive watercolour mop – and it covers the beard area broadly and efficiently.
The plastic handle and drip stand look a little utility, but make no mistake, this is an effective, quality product.
A quite recommendable brush indeed.
The brush is very well-made: after 3 uses there has been none of the initial-use bristle loss that one often finds even with the very best manufacturers such as Simpsons. (I use an Old Major super for everyday and the Wee Scot Simpsons Wee Scot Best Badger Hair Shaving Brush in Imitation Ivory for travel, both from Simpsons. They are terrific brushes!) The bristles on this Edwin Jagger are incredibly soft, made to feel even more so by their length which creates a very flexible loft. The handle enables a very solid hold, and though I would not normally choose black, that is purely a matter of taste and not a major issue.
What is more of an issue for me is the brush's size: for me it is unnecessarily large and, in this case at least, size does matter! Because the knot and loft are so big, precision is impossible in applying the soap: and it's softness, a quality I really like in a shaving brush, makes it spread even wider, even with the gentlest handling. (Aim for the area below the bottom lip and the upper bristles excavate the nostrils!) The size of the loft also means that far more soap is necessary to get the lather I like: I apply a soap stick to my face and the brushes I use then generate and hold enough lather to allow for two further coverings, if necessary. With this brush, the same soaping provided only one pretty meagre lathering because the brush absorbed most of it, and there was literally no lather left for a second application.Read more ›
Edwin Jagger are renowned for their brushes. They're not cheap, but they are one of the best. Of course you can get an inferior cheaper brush just like you can get a BMW car or a Skoda. They are simply very different.
BEST RAZOR TO ACCOMPANY?
The perfect accompaniment to this is the Merkur 1904 Double Edge Safety Razor with 100 Feather Hi-Stainless Double Edge Safety Razor Blades and Taylors of Old Bond Street Shaving Cream (150g, Sandalwood)
Using this is like going from walking, with shoes with holes in, to driving a sports-car, with the roof down, and some bunny girls in the back.
It retains water superbly, lathers like a lather machine factory* and it feels soooooooo soft. (*I am aware there's no such thing as a lather machine factory)
GIFT OR TREAT
An ideal gift for a wet shaver. If it's not your birthday maybe it's time to treat yourself...
