Format: Paperback
This book is based on in-depth research and primary evidence. It is beautifully illustrated and written with style and athority. The author visited over 100 houses selected to illustrate fine decortive features and other characterstics of domestic architecture and garden design of the late 19th and early 20th century. All this is put into a social context of visiting cards and parlor conversations which along with the incredible detail of observation builds an atmosphere of the time. This book will open your eyes to a fascinating era of domestic building. If you live in one of the many thousands of houses built during this period you must buy this book.

I must say I was underwhelmed by this book. Pages and pages of text and some pretty poor illustrations, mostly in black and white and far too small and badly reproduced to be a decent source book. Reads a bit like a collection of research papers tagged together.
