Format: Paperback
This book is an ideal introduction to Hopper as an artist. It fails, only slightly, in that it doesn't outline, sufficiently, the role played by his wife. Nor does it say anything about his domineering attitude towards her. If you are looking for something from which to build a proper appreciation of the art, rather than the man, this is a good place to begin.

The book describes Hoppers life in art starting out as an illustrator and then becoming a full time fine art painter. There are many separate descriptions of individual paintings with comparisons of other artists who paint in a similar style. The other artists work is shown as small black and white pictures of their work. The book gives a view of how people regarded Hoppers paintings and what he himself thought. This is a good book for anyone wanting to know more about Hopper and his work.

4.0 out of 5 stars An easy start to appreciate Hopper's work. 10 Dec. 1999
By isaacchen - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This book is quite easy to read while sometimes it's not easy to enjoy the pleasure of an art work. Edward Hopper, an icon of the realistic painter of the U.S.. Solitude, isolation and alienation are common emergence in many Hopper's work. It's like reading a novel of metaphor leaving "readers" a huge space to imagine the context of the painting. The book provides a lot of clues for us to step into the "Literatural world" of Hopper.
