I wish I had read this book before I started homeschooling...however better late than never. If you are a home educator or thinking of home education this is a great book to give you an in depth view of what home ed is all about from a Christian perspective. It very much leans towards a "whole book" approach which is very Charlotte Mason esq but helps to give a perspective on other ways to home school as well. And it gives practical advice and tools to get the job done. It is very thorough and a little daunting in size and length but I have been reading it slowly over a period of moths and gleaned many useful and inspiring ideas. It is very biblically focussed so if that is not for you I recommend you stay away, but I personally found the emphasis on Holy Spirit leading hugely helpful. I have to say I do not fully agree with the rather staunch stance the authors seem to take on homeschooling being the only biblical model for education, but I didn't have much problem skipping over those assumptions to get to some really inspiring ideas and insights. I highly recommend for any Christian homeschoolers to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars THe best homeschooling resource of ALL time! 3 July 2011
By Nick Wride - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Several year ago I was fortunate enough to have stumbled into a homeschooling group that the Clarkson's were part of. At the time I had no idea who they were or about their ministry but I was in need of guidance and encouragement. Homeschooling was so much harder than I thought it would be and we hadn't even made it through our first year in Kindergarten!:) I desperately wanted to do what was right and I felt impressed that homeschooling was the way to go but I was also filled with fear. I tried a boxed curriculum while I tried to read more and understand the different methods of teaching but we weren't able to keep up with the demands of a classroom curriculum and I felt like such a failure.Neither my daughter or I were enjoying the learning process. Sally was kind enough to bring that simple point to light by posing the question and shortly after called me over to give me a copy of her book as she felt impressed to do. I never shared everything with her as far as our situation was concerned and we moved shortly after but this book has had such a huge impact on our lives. It became my friend and constant companion in homeschooling and changed the way we did everything. If you are wavering in your homeschooling endeavors, need permission to think outside the box, or would like encouragement as you disciple and win your children's hearts, this book is a must have!

5.0 out of 5 stars THE resource for Christian homeschool moms! 3 Mar. 2012
By Marcy @BenandMeBlog - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Now that I've been homeschooling for a few years, I am often asked for recommendations to assist new homeschoolers in getting started. Seven years ago, when we first talked about homeschooling, I was blessed to have happened upon the 2nd edition of what has become THE resource I have recommended to new homeschoolers (and a few veterans in need of extra encouragement). This book is now in it's 3rd edition and I was thrilled to be given the opportunity to read and review it.

Educating the WholeHearted Child is nearly 400 pages, about 100 pages bigger than my dog-eared, highlighted, often borrowed copy of the 2nd edition. This extensively revised third edition will help you build a solid biblical foundation for educating and nurturing your children's hearts, minds, and souls. The book is divided into 4 sections (Home, Methods, Learning, and Living), sudivided into 18 chapters.

From recommendations for getting started homeschooling to Biblical parenting and discipleship to discovering the learning styles of your students (and everything in between), the Clarksons' have covered it all and then some. Whether you are considering homeschooling, new to homeschooling, or have been homeschooling for years, you will find encouragement, inspiration, and a plethera of information in this "handbook for Christian home education".

The Clarksons have whole-heartedly educated 4 children, who are now grown and serving God. They must be on to something.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best "Big Picture" book on homeschooling I've read 25 Jan. 2012
By P. Dean - Published on Amazon.com

This book is absolutely packed from cover to cover with insights! I'm currently homeschooling my children in their 3rd year, and we've made plenty of mistakes with curriculum choices over the years. This book is all about coming back to the basics, to the heart of the children. After all, what does education matter if they don't have the character to live out godly lives? It's thrilling to me to look through the pages - it's taken me 6 weeks to read through half the book, because my husband and I are going slowly and trying to absorb everything. There is a lot about the bigger picture and vision for the children becoming disciples of Christ, but there are also TONS of practical steps, ideas, and lists. My confidence in schooling my five beloved children is renewed, and this will be a book I turn to over and over again over the course of our home education. While they don't lay out a step by step plan with instructor's guides and test questions, they lay the groundwork for a fantastic educational MODEL, which we are trying out right now. It works, it fits, and it can be adjusted to any family! Hand in hand with Holy Spirit, we CAN educate our children - we CAN disciple them!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Christian Parent's Liberation from "Curriculum-In-A-Box" 3 Nov. 2013
By Rebecca Kemp - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This wasn't the first homeschooling book I ever read but it is definitely the best and the first one I recommend to others who have chosen or are considering homeschooling their children! I found an older copy while browsing a used book store and picked it up for $2 - the best $2 I have ever spent. This book covers everything from keep you home in order (with the help of the children, of course), cultivating family bonds, discipling to our children, different types of homeschool methods, dispelling myths many people have come to believe about homeschooling/homeschoolers, and of course, ensuring that your children get the quality education you wish for them while surrounded by love and encouragement that builds them up.

One of my favorite areas in the book is the part about creating discovery zones in you home. They talk about how you don't need a "classroom at home" or even a designated homeschool room to make your home one filled with learning; create a loving atmosphere, make available the tools and resources to aid in learning, and give your children encouragement and guidance and they will thrive.

I got my $2 book 3 years ago and it has been so well loved and used constantly that it is now falling apart so I am purchasing this newer version. This book gave me the courage to step away "curriculum-in-a-box" and I have never looked back!

5.0 out of 5 stars EXcited to see the new edition! 29 Jun. 2011
By joystrength - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I am a three-year homeschooler. I have used several of the Clarkson's books in my home, both as a parent (re: discipline) and as a homeschooler. I really have enjoyed their fresh perspective and their "Yes, you really CAN do it" encouragement. They are detailed in the books and methods they recommend and are real -- REALLY real!! Based mostly on a Charlotte Mason-bent, this book encourages parents to custom their child's education. With lists and lists of curricula and "living books" and sprinkled with "been there" stories, this book is a great "beginner" guide or just a plain wonderful guide for an experienced homeschooling parent! I "wholeheartedly" recommend it!!
