Review

Praise for Russel D McLean: "Dark and bloody excursion into Glasgow gangland. Edgy from page one." - Sunday Times Crime Club. "A palpable air of menace...a highly accomplished [thriller] that mesmerizes from an author well worth watching." - Robert Morace. "Chillingly plausible... a wonderfully dark and disturbing tale of misplaced loyalty and betrayal; a beautifully paced, action-packed thriller of a book." - James Oswald. "An uncompromising work of Glasgow noir, brutal and driven...complicated and conflicted but achingly real." - Eva Dolan. Russel's first novel, The Good Son, was shortlisted for the Shamus Best First PI novel of 2009 by the Private Eye Writers of America. --Sunday Times Crime Club

A high-octane read." --Maxim Jakubowski

I read a lot of crime novels. Some of them can, to be honest, be a bit samey which was why it was such a breath of fresh air to read Ed's Dead. There is nothing remotely cliched about this book. From the tone - archly comic and gritty at the same time - to the plot - constantly surprising - and the central character - as kick-ass a female protagonist as you could want and a bookseller to boot - it just sings! I was already a Russel D McLean fan but this has raised the bar. Can't wait for the next.

Great fun, great plot – and a warning to us all never to cross a bookseller!

So much of a roller-coasting, thrill-a-minute joy ride that when the book hit one particularly high peak, I raised my hands in the air and screamed, 'Geronimo!'. Bit disappointed no one offered to sell me a souvenir Polaroid at the end.

Much as I enjoyed the earlier books, Ed's Dead is the real Russel McLean - a novel bursting with wry humour and full of sharp observations on the blundering, often random nature of what we all like to convince ourselves is a carefully constructed life-plan.

So glad I brought this on holiday with me. The down side is I now keep expecting to accidentally bump off a few fellow holiday makers by impaling them with a pool brolly, or distract them so much with my lily-white, flabby torso that they topple of their balcony.

Outstanding pace, high adrenaline, fast and fun. Our heroine is credible as just a regular bookseller for whom a bad boyfriend brings more trouble than he was worth, by far. And then things go downhill. Cue the Thelma and Louise-style action. She becomes dangerous, deadly, but we're on her side all the way. Highly recommended.
