Product Description

Product Description

A decent wireless adaptor is all that stands between happy surfing and frustrating hours spent trying to work out why the connection keeps dropping. The EW-7318USg is a Hi-Gain USB adaptor, so it should get a strong signal where other adaptors fail.It comes with a 4dBi aerial, which can be unscrewed and replaced with a larger aerial if you need it. Not that you should, as we managed to get a throughput of 16.45Mbit/s in our Far range test, which is good for a USB adaptor.

Manufacturer's Description

EW-7318USg complies with IEEE802.11g standards and is backward comptiable with IEEE802.11b standards. With the connection speed up to 54Mbps (5 times faster then IEEE802.11b), EW-7318USg connects the laptop computer or desktop computer to the wireless network easily. You can also connect to any public wirless hotspot for Internet to retrieve e-mail, surf web sites or use instant messaging. EW-7318USg gives you the freedom to join the network.

The installation and configuration is easy. You can configure EW-7318USg by either Windows wireless utilites or Edimax utilities. EW-7318USg supports advanced encryption, like WEP, WPA and WPA2 to secure the wireless transmission. With its Turbo Mode feature, it can increase the transmission speed 30% faster when connecting with other Edimax wireless devices, like adapter, access point or router. Just received this morning. All set up within 5 minutes, well impressed with it. It's connected to my Netgear DG834G, and I'm using Vista.

As a tip, the disc comes with old drivers, so I went to the Edimax website, and navigated through to download the Vista drivers. Without plugging it in, I then ran the Vista installer, which seemed to not be doing much for a good 2-3 minutes. After that, you'll see an icon for it in the system-tray.

Right-click that, and open the configuration tool. Scan for your network, add in the key (I use 128bit) and hey presto. The connection is as fast, if not faster, than my the wired ethernet connection i used previously. My desktop is about 10meters away from the router, and I'm getting 100% link quality. Very very impressed. Would definitely recommend to anyone.

The translation in the guidebook might not be the best but the instructions are clear and logical. I had no problems loading the software and following the on screen prompts. The adapter was up and running within 10 minutes, which included optimising it for increased performance.

It has replaced a Netgear WG111T and performs much better. As well as the aerial, which genuinely works, there's also a cable that allows you to move the adapter to further improve the signal if necessary.

For the price this product offers great value for money.

I did my homework before I decided which route to follow to go wireless.
After Spending many hours reading other peoples reviews, I was quite shocked to discover just how badly Netgear and Belkin products have scored on here! They are the better known and more expensive brands on the market, but don't be fooled into thinking because they cost more they are going to be better!

I have a new HP Pavillion desktop, so installing a wireless LAN PCI Card was out of the equation as the last thing you really want to be doing with a brand new computer is getting a screwdriver to it and opening it up.
The obvious choice for me was the Edimax EW-7318USG as it is simply a USB 2.0 plug & play device. I also ordered the ReSMA 9db 2.4GHz rubber duck antenna as I noticed these items are frequently bought together.

I'm not going to say this was a doddle to set up and get running in ten minutes or so...It took me more like 2 hours of fettling around with it to get connected, though this was mainly through no fault of the product itself!

I didn't bother to run the software provided. It's clearly printed on the software itself 10 June 2006 ~ so obviously this isn't a driver designed for windows Vista. Acting upon advice I had previously read in someone else's review I went to the Edimax website (via Google) and downloaded the correct up-to date drivers for Vista.

First problem I found - with the adapter plugged directly into the back of my HP P.C, I am unable to mount the antenna pointing upwards. This is due to the USB sockets on my computer being configured the opposite way around to allow for this.

Wireless USB Adapters are a nightmare on Vista x64, I'd purchased two expensive models and they either didn't work on x64 due to lack of support (such as Netgear, who are still selling USB Adapters which simply won't work on Vista x64) or they claimed to work but caused bluescreens and random software errors (Linksys).

I had totally overlooked this little gem as the price put me off - I figured it was the one least likely to work seeing as the box looks rather dated and it doesn't even state that it works with Vista x64. But seeing as it was so cheap I figured I'd already wasted £80 on the others so I might as well give it a try.

Wow! I only unboxed it 10 minutes ago and here I am. I installed the latest drivers from the website, connected it to the computer and it installed and worked perfectly from the get-go.

I disabled it's build in 'wireless management' software which can simply be removed from the start-up folder and it works just as well with the Windows Vista built in wireless connection manager. Seems to support everything the more expensive models did, only this time it actually works!

Would highly recommend. Don't let the price put you off.

Oh, and a 5 bar signal with the aerial as well!

excellent bit of kit, especially when you turn it into a uni directional antenna on freeantennas.com using tin foil and cardboard!

i get a 45% signal from my friends which is across the road and about 75 metres away, it picks up most signals around the street, and when using a usb cable extension, you can literally position it where ever you want.

and speeds are very fast, on bbc iplayer i was getting 600-700 kbps based on a network stretched out for 75 meters using a bog standard netgear router on aol adsl up to 8 meg. enough said really
