After protracted emails to the vendor, with repeated assurances from them that a new disc would be 'sourced', I was ignored. I never did get a replacement disc, and eventually found the 'software' online - turned out it was a manual, which was very useful (unfortunately I was not allowed to down-load it, only read it). Anyhow, in a nut-shell, decent bit of gear, good price on Amazon - but once it's yours, you are on your own! Do not expect any assist from the guys who took your cash but sent you faulty goods!
They power down when not in use.
Not the fastest system, but are great for storing movies/videos on.
I am using it as 4 separate drives and storing TV series on them. You can create a single drive as JBOD, but I do not have the courage to do that, ie makes it too a big target for one disk to fail.
I am running it hanging off a Apple Mac Mini running Snow Leopard, it works very well indeed.
I wish I could find one like this that has Firewire 800 support too.
