I've been helping out with exam preparation and how to revise for a group of young people and found that this book and the accompanying DVD was really easy to follow.
It's not a teaching aid, it doesn't tell the student how to do the maths problems, but it does give really good tips about the whole examination process.

Lots of practice questions and papers, and the answers are at the back of the book. Well set out, easy to follow - it doesn't make maths fun, but it helps with preparation for exams.

Maths exams can be difficult especially when you don't know what to expect. But practice makes perfect and this book which includes a free on-line edition which includes video solutions hosting experts talking you through each question!

There are answers also at the back of this book as well as two practice exams with on-line video solutions.
Remember this GCSE Mathematics is the higher level and the Exam Board is Edxcel

Wonderful for revision - it separates the topics and gives grades for each question with detailed answers in the back.

I like the puzzle book feel of it and the checklist at the front so you can see what you need to brush up. I'm hoping the new GCSE version will be as useful.

This book provides great guidance to those approaching their Maths GCSEs. It is not a book that helps you with how to do the maths required - instead it is a more of a "how to do your maths exam" book which show you how to approach an exam and the different questions. The questions are initially grouped into topics and you are provided with guidance as to how to answer them, the marking schemes and the difficulty of the individual questions. This works really well as it helps to highlight areas where a little more learning/revising is required and also helps to build confidence in areas that are well understood. There are also 2 complete exams included and the online videos of experts working through these exams was really useful.

Overall we have found this book to be a great confidence booster and I think that it would be of benefit to anyone approaching GCSE maths, regardless of exam board.

If you're a parent with a child facing the Edexcel Maths GCSE examination, you'll probably be wondering about how to help her to revise. This worked for me with a reluctant student who had little confidence.

The questions are well paced and presented, and it's quite possible for a well-motivated student to work through the book at her own pace, using the hints and answers to guide to the correct procedures. ANd for the not-so-well-motivated, then a parent or reasonable savvy adult can use this with her to encourage the habits of success.

The DVD is whizzy too! And as with all CGP guides, the appearance is friendly and sort-of funky, using a register that addresses the teenager. It worked for mine!

6 sections covered quite well:
- Numbers
- Algebra
- Graphs
- Geometry and Measures
- Pythagoras and Trigonometry
- Statistics and Probability

2 practice papers at the end. Solutions are given. A code is provided to get the equivalent online book on your device (PC or tablet) with access to videos (I did not use as to not "waste" the code for the final receipient)

I have a sneaking suspicion that the questions are pretty easy to those who are well prepared. It is a good confidence builder.

Good luck to the candidate.

The main content of this book is practice questions across the higher level Maths GCSE syllabus for the Edexcel examination board. There are no explanations or worked examples within the book, this is solid practice, to be used as examination practice.
Answers for these are given.
In addition there are also two practice papers to be worked through. The answers for these are not given but are accessible online via a unique key, which also accesses a full online edition of the book for use on PC or tablet. The answers are worked through in videos online. This is a really useful teaching method, but it's a shame that these couldn't have been put on to a DVD. This would have pushed up the purchase price however and the book is really affordable.
The online access key can only be used by one person which slightly restricts the book's usefulness if you have children fairly near to each other in age, but again buying another copy won't break the bank.
The Edexcel syllabus does not differ greatly from others and this would be useful practice for anyone studying with other UK examination boards.

Thankfully, GCSEs are a distant memory for me but these days I am an informal tutor for the children of a number of friends. I also have some experience as a STEMNET ambassador bringing Science & Engineering into schools. Having taken physical sciences to postgraduate level, continuing to educate myself through my choice of reading material and working in a technical domain, the GCSE level material isn't hard for me to grasp. What is more difficult is knowing how far a given student has already progressed in their schooling and thinking of ways to present information in an accessible and stimulating way.

The CGP guides are really very good at that part. They are graphically well presented, contain tick-boxes to help a student keep track of sections covered and provide ample questions to help reinforce the learning (interactive online edition in particular). The exam tips section is also well considered for the target teenage readership and these skills can easily be overlooked when revising subject material.

With maths there's no substitute for practice and with both paper and online support I'd highly recommend this guide to students and those assisting them.
