I've now owned two of these dehumidifiers and both have died after a year. Initially, they were fine - effectively drying the air and running much quieter than compressor-based dehumidifiers. However, they both suddenly stopping working properly, and started cutting out with an "over heat" warning light, within 60 seconds of turning on. This is despite having clean air filters. Because they lasted 6 months, Amazon doesn't want to know.

This is an excellent buy, we live in an old property with two young kids and this has really done an excellent job of reducing the amount of humidity on our upstairs landing where we normally dry our washing during the winter months. We have single glazed windows, which by themselves act as very good dehumidifier, however the condensation tends to sit on the glass and create mildew if left unchecked, with the new dehumidifier we have found that the condensation is reduced almost completely and we have zero problems with mildew or associated mold.

After checking that I could, I've attached the unit to a low cost digital power timer plug and we have it running on the ECO medium setting each day for three hours. Our washing dries twice as fast as it used to, meaning that it can all be done in less time with less fuss.

I highly recommend cleaning the filter as often as you can manage, as I've read that a lot of people have problems with it breaking down due to the desiccant stone filling up with dust and fluff and no longer working, we clean ours every couple of days.

All in all we've found it to be a very simple, easy and effective piece of equipment requiring only a couple of minutes attention every few days. We've never owned a dehumidifier before, so we have nothing to compare it to.

The only downside or improvement we could find was that it doesn't allow you to pour the water reservoir without pulling up the lid, which seems clunky to us.

All in all if you can find better then buy it, if not, buy this.

Dessicant dehumidifers are generally regarded as the Mercedes of the dehumidifier world. being able to work with little noise (no compressor) and at very low heats etc..

I had this one in the office for a while and just could not get on with it. You see there is an electric heater within it - or a heating element at the very least - and it will take awhile for the off gassing of chemicals from the element wire to eventually evaporate. I was particularly sensitive to this smell and could only tolerate it on low setting. If I put it on the high setting and left the office and then came back after a while it literally stunk to high heaven. It worked yes but it stank! even on low it was noticeable. I could smell it all the time . my wife wasn't so sensitive ot the smell and could only smell it when entering the office after a long absence.

I then demoted it to the basement where it quite happily did it's job fairly efficiently. But it has take a good while for it to stop smelling so bad - and it still gives off a odour even now. I went with a standard compressor type for the office then as I have never had a odour issue with that kind ever and sure enough didn't with the replacement either.

So yes it works - works well but it stinks - bear that in mind if you're going to have it in say a young child's room or a communal living area - for this reason I can only give it 4 stars.

    *** ADDENDUM: ***

well after just 14 months or so of use it's stopped working!

I bought this almost 2 months ago and so far I'm very happy with it...
It can bring humidity in an average sized room from about 60% to 45% in a couple of hours on the low setting, without being too loud... I don't think it can bring it less than 40% or how much time it would take, but something between 40-45% is enough...
The "high" setting is even more powerful but quite loud.
Be advised that these types of appliances are very energy consuming and you'll definitely notice on your electricity bill. The story is that it helps keep your heating costs down because dry air is easier to warm up, but overall you will be consuming significantly more. After 3 months of using this my electricity bill went up the roof so now I'm using it only a couple of hours per day before going in bed...
I was a little concerned by reading a number of reviews from users complaining that it broke down. Given that the manufacturer offers now 2 years of guarantee I only hope that it will not be the case anymore...

I bought an EcoAir as my first dehumidifier - thinking that desiccants were better than compressors, based on the reviews. Although it worked, I was never happy with the "fan heater" effect of dry heat. I have now sold the EcoAir and replaced it with an Inventor Compressor 20L machine - which is about the same price. Although the compressor is a bit noisier, it is much more powerful - so does not need to be on for as long. From my experience, desiccants are only really needed for cold spaces (such as an unheated conservatory). For normal use, a compressor is a much better option.
