WYCLEF JEAN The Ecleftic (2000 Austrian 27-track 2-CD set including 8-track bonus disc which includes Gone Till November & We Trying To Stay Alive picture sleeve)

Amazon.co.uk

Welcome to hip-hop originality. On Wyclef Jean's The Ecleftic, his beats-beyond-borders ideology, seen on the Fugees' The Score and his own Carnival, shines bright. Rap's renaissance man, he's pushing hip-hop forward with his musical vision. Firmly rooted in an inclusive old-school aesthetic (recalling Kool Herc and Afrika Bambaataa) he's got Kenny Rogers and Pharoahe Monch sharing space on a dub plate; Youssou N'Dour guests on the indignant, powerful "Diallo"; and Mary J. Blige joins Wyclef for the mournfully beautiful duet "911". Though there are many musical flavours on The Ecleftic, Jean's deft musical arrangements prevent them from descending into tokenism. But at the end of the day, there's no doubt that this is hip-hop, with taut tracks like "Thug Angels", "However You Want It", and "Pulling Me In" showing that Wyclef's holding it down for the heads, some of whom felt that his Carnival was a little too poppy. The Ecleftic contains enough anger and righteous indignation to be real hip-hop, and enough humour and musical magic to be fun. --Lizz Mendez Berry

I love this album, once again Wyclef Jean has hit all the right buttons and created a brave, upbeat and frankly damn cool album. The Ecleftic is perhaps slightly harder than the fantastic Carnival (Wyclef's first album) It is more like the fugees gritty first effort Blunted on Reality but still displays Wyclef's incredible diversity. There are really original collaborations with WWF's The Rock, Mary J Blige, Kool and the Gang and Kenny Rogers which help carry off the mix of country, funk, street and rock in an exciting hip hop fusion. Controversial as usual, there are thinly veiled attacks on the NYPD (Diallo)and the other fugees (Where fugee at) and the violent nature of gangsta rap (Dirty South). The Haitian connection is played down, with all the tracks in english. The album's harder style means it lacks some of the more melodic nature of The Carnival but Clef is a master the catchy hook and the singles Perfect Gentleman and It Doesn't Matter prove that the former fugee is back on top, crowd pleasing form. His break away from the harder elements of hip hop music may have given him the label of a sell out, but The Ecleftic pushes Hip Hop's boundaries in the most original way, whilst promoting a positive life message that is sometimes lacking from Gangsta rap. Check out There's Something about Mary for a dose of Wyclef comedy, 911 for Wyclef at his most soulful and Wish You Were Here for the bravest Pink Floyd cover ever!

The Ecleftic has moments of genius. But it also has 'It Doesnt Matter' and 'However You Want It'. If you havent bought a Clef album, buy the Carnival first (undoubtedly the best album of 1997-1998 - the lost years of HipHop). This shows moments of class, such as 'Thug Angels', '911' and 'Diallo', but with a more hiphop feel than the carnival, it shows off Clef's somewhat mediocre rapping skills on some of the other tracks.
I am sure that if Clef does a few more albums, then does a well selected Greatest Hits compilation in 6-7 years time, it will be a true classic peice of musical genius.
Hot tracks: 'Thug Angels', '911', 'Diallo' & 'Something About Mary'.
Not so Hot: 'It doesn't Matter', 'Pullin Me in', & 'However You Want It'.
Basically, the Carnival is a better album, with about 10 great songs (2 of which are included on the Spcial Edition Ecleftic disc). But the Ecleftic is well worth buying.

This has to be one of my favourite albums of all time, I love Wyclef's style of music and there is not one song on this album I am not addicted to. I think 911 and it dosent matter were perfect for his two releases. It dosent matter was destined to be hit when u have the likes of The Rock lending a hand and 911 is the sexiest love song of all time with Wyclef and Mary J Blige singing their hearts out. I also love the bumpin beat in Pullin Me In, The catchiness of Low Income and the funky sound of Perfect Gentleman. All in all wyclef has perfectly packaged together an amazing album for all his fans.

Wyclef is a star, there are a few real stars left. He shows that it is not about Hip Hop, Reggae, Country or Rock. This album is about music and it speaks to the soul. "Diallo" says it the way it is and brings in the great drums of Africa. "I'm in love with a hooker", he says: love a person for who they are and not what they are. He without sin should cast the first stone, just like my MAN Je*** said. Those who have ears listen to the lyrics and reflect on message in the music. The rythm is great, the lyrics fabulous and the voices touch your soul. A perfect album!!!!

This album is very good. I like it especially because it has a mixture of many different sounds. I've found that with quite alot of hip hop albums i've bought they have all sounded the same and each artist doesn't seem to have a percific sound. But Wyclef has. There are lots of tracks but quite a few are skits Skit: Columbia Records, Red Light District, Whitney Housten Dub plate, Bus Search, But these introduce the next song. There are some songs that stand out like, 'Perfect Gentleman', 'Something About Mary', 'Thug Angels', 'However you Want', and 'Diallo' (which is 7mins long). This album is quite hard hip hop and can tkae some getting used to. Don't listen to it once and think, "This is Rubbish, listen to it three or four times. If you like perfect gentleman then you will like this album but the rest of it isn't like perfect gentleman. If you like Gone 'till November of Wyclefs first album, 911, and It Doesn't matter then you'll like it because this album is like that. Highly recommended

... then get them on a compilation album. I'm afraid that if you're attracted by Wyclef's fantastic and original voice then these (and perhaps Diallo) are the only tracks where you get to hear it. The rest is definitely hip-hop territory. I'm sure if you're into that it's a superb album, but if you're looking for something different it's a let down. The two 'dub plate' tracks sound exactly like Ali G, only he's taking the p***! In my opinion a huge waste of a huge talent and my most disappointing album buy for many years.

i need to review this album because i am so angry that no one else has given one of the greatest solo artist's on the planet the five stars that he deserves.
wyclef is a talent beyond belief. he can play almost any style of music, from cheesy nightclub pop (it doesn't matter and perfect gentleman) to classic soul (911) and experiments into old rock(wish you were here).
this is a very mature album, perfect for destressing and cheering you up.
the kenny rogers track is a great sing along, pulling me in and however you want it are very soothing track that will remove all your stress. theres something about mary is a bit of a naughty track, but also quiet inocent at the same time.
it is quiet difficult to define wyclef to a particular genre of music, rap? R&B? soul? soft rock? perhaps a little touch of reggae?
in todays music industry it must be difficult to stand out from the crowd, to not be afraid to experiment with something different, (yes even if that means using samples) wyclef seems to be the only one not affraid to go off on his own and this album if proof of his unique talent and determination to be different from all other artists.
if you're thinking of buying this album because you like the fugees, think again. like the fugees because you like wyclef , not wyclef because you like the fugees, that may make sense to some people.
another reveiwer stated that you'll need to listen to the album 3 or 4 time to know whether you like it or not. this shouldn't be necessary.
this is an album made for those with an open mind, this album is different, it is gentle friendly music, no violent or profane words will come out of his mouth. this is simply a repectable, relaxing, happy, friendly little record that will offend no one and should, in theory please many folk, click on 'add to my basket' right now!!!
