Every once in a while, a CD comes along that blows me away with its brilliance. This is one such CD.
"Echoes" is a 78 minute collection containing 14 of Einaudi's most beautiful compositions, selected from four previous albums. In addition, there are three bonus tracks recorded live in London during the Summer of 2003.
Some tracks are piano solos, others are orchestrated. What is consistent, however, is the melodic beauty which shines throughout this disc. It is a joy to listen to from start to finish.
The CD insert contains notes about the origin of the pieces.
I can't recommend this CD highly enough. It is destined to become a classic.

I first heard of Einaudi whilst driving home listening to Nick Baileys show on Classic fm and instantly knew that I had to buy a CD of his work. I think that you will also fall for the Italian composers wonderful sounds dominated by the piano.
It took me a couple of months to track down a CD and I searched high and low in Manchester record shops. It didn't help that I couldn't remember how his name was spelt.
However I feel that I have been rewarded for my perseverance because the Einaudi Collection features tracks from all of his four CDs and you couldn't ask for a better introduction to his work.
It is such an easy work to listen to and it does achieve what he sets out to do which is to provoke emotions of happiness or sadness with his music. Out of the night for example was written as he came out of a dark creative period when he could see light at the end of the tunnel. The piece starts off slowly and melancholy but soon begins to skip along and become upbeat and optimistic.
He draws from his many musical influences that range from the great classical composers to pop and rock, whilst his inspiration comes from many different sources. Sources like a trip to Africa and he based his fourth album on a 13th Century African song written to lament the death of a hippo that had been accidentally killed by a hunter. So you can see from this example that he loves to use his music to relate and tell stories.
Equally he paints images and concepts in his music and the first track The Waves is a composition about the relationship between the waves, time and life. His inspiration for this came from Virginia Woolfs book of the same name.

I first heard The Days (I Giorni) on Classical FM, as a student at College I have recently discovered the delights of listening to classical music when I am studying, I find it helps immensly when you want something on in the background, but not something too heavy that you will probably get distracted by. After listening to I Giorni I was so taken I bought the album, not even knowing how to spell it. As soon as I got it I played track 4, the days, almost constantly. But as I listened to other tracks I was pleasantly suprised as track 1 was the music played over the John Lewis advert, the company I work for, which was kind of nice. Being a pianist myself I can sit for hours on end, running my fingers over the keys, composing pieces, instantly forgetting some of them, but I love it and Einaudi does just that. Its soothing and calm, something you may call easy listening but you have to appreciate the talent that he expresses.
This CD can be put on repeat and listened to all day, in the bath with a glass of wine or simply sat and appreciating great music.
I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to find music to relax by. Every now and again there is a CD where every track brings something new and can be listened to again and again. This is definitely one of them.

I too first heard Einaudi's music on ClassicFM and was immediately hooked. After listening to the radio almost non-stop for 3 days to find out who this amazing composer was I immediately set out to get hold of his music for myself, and so I got "Echoes". What can I say? It's simply one of the most sublime CD's I've ever listened to. Yes, I can see where some people think the music can be a bit too 'pretty' at times but that is really not a problem for me. My favourite track on the CD is Track 13 "Odd Days" which I tend to play over and over again.
The best thing for me though when I listen to this CD is that I can physically feel the weight being lifted from my shoulders, and it just takes me away from everything. "Echoes" is one of the best relaxers and de-stressers I have come across in a long while (music-wise at least). Even my husband who generally only likes music he can mosh to said that I could leave "Echoes" playing on the CD as it was "kind of nice"- high praise indeed.

I first heard Einaudis "una mattina" on Classic FM, unfortunatly that track is not on the album and was completely mesmerised by his outstanding musicmanship. I am fairly new to classical music, but be in no doubt I have an ear for great music and i'm sure my ears are not deceiving me or that I am making a mistake by saying that this is a masterpiece collection of his piano work. If everyone had this playing in their car on the way home, road rage would be a thing of the past. It's an absolutly relaxed, chilled album, and it works wonders on my twins, in a way of soothing them off to sleep.
I cannot fault this album at all and I would highly recommend this collection to anyone new to classical music or even a veteran.
Sit back, open your mind and let the music take you on a journey.
