HD gives you a crystal clear picture and Dolby® Digital Plus is supported to ensure glorious digital sound, when you’re connected to a compatible home cinema system and receiving compatible broadcasts.
The Ultra Slim Box features a user friendly, 8 day Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) allowing you to plan your viewing and recordings at the touch-of-a-button. The fully integrated 500GB hard disk drive (HDD) ensures abundance of recording space; up to 300 hours in SD, or up to 125 hours in HD. Scheduled recordings also track the broadcast so you don’t need to worry if things change. You have the flexibility of watching one show and recording another; better still, if you’re watching a recording, you can record up to two other programmes simultaneously. You can even start to view a recording before it’s finished using the chase play feature; our intelligent software will even search for HD versions of your chosen recordings, ensuring that you get the best quality programming – the Ultra Slim Box will even seek out other show times if you have any recording clashes. A handy trailer booking feature allows you to schedule recordings directly from programme advertisements.
Easily browse and manage your library of recordings using the award-winning graphical user interface (GUI), the Ultra Slim Box instantly creates folders for series recordings and all your timers are presented in a single list in the daily schedule.

When connected to the Internet via your broadband router, the Ultra Slim Box provides access to entertainment on demand* and catch-up TV including BBC iPlayer; with more Smart TV services to come. The BBC’s red button interactive services are supported right out of the box.
Parental Guidance, Subtitles, Audio escription and Energy Saving – under 1W in standby. A fully functional remote control allows you to control both your Ultra Slim Box and your TV. Software updates are available over-the-air, manually and via the Internet*.
The Ultra Slim Box allows you to record all your favourite TV programmes on the huge 500GB hard drive that we have fitted inside the slim casing – this is ample space for up to 300 hours recording of standard definition or 125 hours of HD TV. Series link ensures that all your favourite programmes are recorded at the touch-of-a-button.
Concerned about missing the action? Don’t worry. You can now leave the room without missing any of the action - pause live TV for up to an hour.
Missed something, a goal, a must-see again scene on your favourite soap, or perhaps a vital ingredient for a recipe on a cookery show? Picture quality noticably better, functions easy to use and fairly intuitive, the remote control does feels a bit plasticy and cheap when compared to the quality of the unit itself but that is just me being a bit picky.
To echo what was said by a previous reviewer, my only issue is that at the moment there is no access to BBC iPlayer, a page on the Echostar website says the following:
"July 13th, 2012 It is with regret that as a result of a certification backlog at the BBC, we are unable to confirm when we will be able to make the BBC iPlayer service available on the Ultra Slim Box HDT-610R. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused. We are working closely with the BBC to enable the BBC iPlayer feature and will keep myechostar.com updated with more information as soon as it is available."
Once that is sorted I would quite happily give 5 stars.
Pull your finger out BBC! - Please
Unit was easy to set up with all channels found.
HD is very good.
EPG is intuative with options on screen to record HD instead of SD if available, also if you want to do a 3rd recording ( obviously you can't with 2 tuners) the EPG will seach for an alternative time if available.
Disappointed that iPlayer is not available yet, but I understand this is only a couple of weeks away.
I own other Humax and Samsung PVR's and this unit is well up there with them.
Better looking than a large plastic STB.
First box was clearly faulty, constantly freezing during channel changing etc. Replacement in-hand, the box so far has been stable, took about 10 minutes to tune the usual freeview + hd and radio channels, so a bit slow but you only do this occasionally anyway.
+ Slim (only if you need this feature)
+ If box is not faulty, very easy to set-up & use, EPG is neatly laid out and controls intuitive
+ Easy to add IR extender to keep box hidden away
+ Picture quality as good as Sony's built-in tuner
+ USB ports (since 2014) allow harddrive/pendrive to export standard definition programmes. You cannot import them back though.
- The power supply is on the large slide given you're buying this device for it's slim features
- The remote control feels very cheap
- 2015 update: still no notable online channel/apps offerings other than BBC iPlayer (which is less obviously accessed by being on BBC 1, not HD channel, and pressing Red button or Text). For me this is not an issue as the Sony TV is internet ready, but for others given its price there are better alternates out there.
- No DLNA support
It ticks the box as I had quite a specific need with the size of the device. If you don't care for the size, then other devices offer much more functionality and storage space for the same or less in price.
I exchange for another EchoStar with exactly the same results, I also returned.
Then bought a Logik L1HSTB12 which is brilliant.
The only issue is the remote control ,its nice to look at does the job ,but the clicking noise on every press is very annoying .
But now the price has come down from £270 last year to a more affordable range its worth every penny .
But as I said has being getting buggy as hell, and the picture quality and sound on the hi-definition channels is bad at times, lot of picture break up which has been getting worse.
I did the update on it so it's not that. Pity ,couldn't recommend it really.
Whenever you retune to Freeview channels (which should be done every month of so) you will then most likely have to reprogramme most of your planned recordings. As for it integrating with BBC iPlayer - don't even go there.
If you visit the manufacturers website it looks very like this was an item they produced, realised there were quite a few problems / complaints so just gave up on any future updates or enhancements and just let the remaining stock sell
