This is a riveting account of the commencement of what became an Irish war of independence. The author tells it as it happened from the point of view of those involved, the soldiers on both sides, the people in the City and those responsible for the military operations.

What is extraordinary is the time that the Irish volunteers held out, being that they were heavily outnumbered, outgunned and outmanoeuvred. The author gives a vivid account of the six desperate days of that battle which although a military defeat it was turned into a political victory by the subsequent ill considered actions of the victors.

This book graphically illustrates the costs of such military and political miscalculations on both sides

At times a, bit of a slog, but worth it and the devil is in the detail. Read on kindle not sure if hard copy has, maps or illustration s, from my limited knowledge of local Dublin geography maps etc would have been a great help. Great starting point for those interested in events of 24th April 1916 and the immediate aftermath.

This is utterly compelling. The detail given can only have come from the lips of those who were there. This is an exceptional book, and it will take you back in time to Easter 1916 in Dublin. YOU ARE REALLY THERE, living through it all.
