I am really enjoying reading this. They style is immediate and gritty without being gross and the landscape and characters are very believable. I'm a third of the way through and full of hope that the next 2/3 will be fast moving and to some extent thought provoking. I like this way of history being entertaining whilst also educational; the hairy legs of my history teacher at school made me opt out of 'O' level history so I am enjoying this way of filling in gaps in my knowledge. I highly recommend this book for its feel of gritty authenticity: in particular I love the way the main character lurches into manhood like an unfortunate drunk tripping over life by accident. I'm getting to like him because he is in no position to preach or preen.

I loved this book and found it really compelling. It's a sweeping epic that brings to life a fascinating moment in time, peopled with interesting, flawed characters that carry you through defining moments in history. I can heartily recommend it.

The only downside of this book is that I downloaded it intending to read it leisurely during my 2 week holiday and ended up finishing it 2 days. The combination of historic novel and thriller isn't new but what sets this apart is the believability of the characters and events no doubt under-lied by the authors research. The setting is also unique in that it's a time and place in history that is rarely explored which makes it all the more fascinating. Here's hoping the ending suggests the possibility of a second novel!
