In addition to those two things, the shortness of the book makes it difficult to justify the cover price. Of course, if someone hands you the book or you get it from the library, I would suggest you spend an hour and read it, for there are a few things of note to make it worth your time.
The fact that the author intended this book for fifth graders does give Wolfson some leeway, but I would have still liked a little bit more in depth on just a few different practices instead of the many teasers we were given. Of course, for the attention span of some fifth graders, I think she does a good job of touching in with some interesting practices without boring them with too many details.
To give the author credit, I did learn something. I have not come across anyone else mentioning having some sacred object in the mouth in addition to whatever tool a healer uses to suck the sickness out of a patient.
One thing in particular I really appreciated about the book was Jennifer Hewitson’s illustrations. They are simple and powerful.
